Hi all,

I am painting a bust from Young and would like to verify if the Sumpfmuster 43 was used by the Fallschirmjager at Monte Cassino. I have seen many pics of the Splintermuster in use. (i am trying to be historically correct when i paint)

Appreciate if anyone has photos to share. Tks

Here's a WIP pic of the bust.

Splinter would be the best way to go here. Outstanding painting on the face!!

Fully agree with Jerry....outstanding painting indeed!! He might perhaps not be elected Mr. Nice Guy!

Splinter is 100% on the secure side, Sumpfmuster should also be possible, even grey-green without camo would not be wrong.
By that time the situation was already getting critical, and we are far from the 1940 "Eben-Emael glory".

Cheers

Romain

Thanks guys.

Appreciate the advice. I am still going through some books to verify. A small section of the Osprey book did mention the swamp camo in addition to the splinter camo were used by the fallschirmjager in Monte Cassino.

Personally i feel the tan color of the Sumpfmuster would offer more concealment in the ruins.

You may be correct about the effectiveness of that cammo but believe me,the German army at that point in the war did not have the option to choose what type of smock to wear. They wore what they had!!

Yes!! Wow!! That is coming along brilliantly. Nice splinter on the bonesack. Now that I think about it he kind of resembles Max Schmelling,

Thanks J

The major parts of the bust is done, moving on to the smaller parts - arm carrying the MG34, ammo belts etc

Benjamin this bust is coming along really well- I think you have totally nailed the camo smock- the Luger and the helmet are nicely done too. Super work!

Beautiful painting.

The face is wonderful, but I can really appreciate how you've highlighted and shaded each individual color and area of the camouflage. The faded tops of the "puckers" on the shoulder seam are also very well done as is the touch of fading and worn edges in other areas. The camouflage, IMO, is quite exceptionally well done.

I personally don't care for the stylized "wasp waist" sculpting style of the bust, but that preference does not detract from your beautiful painting.

Thanks for sharing!

It's not a Luger, it's a Walther!!
(Sorry, couldn't resist )

Benjamin, you are a top figure painter for sure!!
This is a scale where mistakes are definitely not allowed!

What troubles me a tad is the light (background) colour of the Splittertarnung. IMHO it is too yellowish-greenish. All my sources show a tone that draws more to grey.

I realise though that you cannot change this anymore!

Beautiful piece anyway!!

Cheers

Wow, metallic effect on the MG42 is spectacular!! Ammo belt looks great too!!!

But what I like best is your skin tone and its perfect shading!!

Congratulations!

Cheers

I have to agree with Romain about...everything! The MG-42 really looks the part- the metal effect is perfect and the bullet belt is a real work of art. Your skin tones give an idea of the tan these guys would have had from fighting in Italy and they are expertly applied on the face and the hand. This is just a fantastic bust from top to bottom- truly excellent work Benjamin- thanks for sharing it with us.
