Could someone point me in the right direction for good reference pictures of the Marine M1A1 tank?
Thanks

Excuse my ignorance here, but as I have been told a billion times "there is no such thing as a dumb question".. I see tons of M1a1 kits on the market. Could some one enlighten me as to what the difference btwn a Marine and an Army one is. Are these major variants or merely a decal change and possibly a different paint job.

I know I'm not the one to correctly answer this question (so correct me if I'm wrong guys)
-The biggest difference I'm seeing is the smoke grenade launchers, marine version=loose pipes (I've no idea to explain that better #:-)) army version=more of a solid block of launchers.
- As I was told the marine version has a small telephone at the rear (never saw that...)
-Marine version has a busttle rack extension
-and offcourse a marine version carries marines...
Reading back my post I know I'm not of a lot of help here... #:-) Try posting this as a topic itself....

Thanks for the links so far. The big reason for asking about a "Marine" M1 is because I have a son in the Corp. He would not be happy if I was building an "army" tank! I also have a nephew in the Marines, he's in aircraft mtc.. Both are bigger then me so I have to be careful!!
I found this site when searching around, shows some nice engine bay shots and an engine outside the tank.

There used to be a site called "Full metal jacket", it had lots of great reference photos and pictures of models. But recently, it is not available anymore. Maybe some one can give more info about the site whereabouts.

Why not ask your son to snap a couple shots for you and you can get all the materialthat you need. And there is not much diffrence between the MARINE and the ARMY besides the grenade launcher and the lettering. I think that some of th equipment placement is diffrent because of unit SOP's. but if they were to pull up beside each other you probibly could not tell the diffrence.

Currently, only the new DML USMC OIF M1A1 Abrams comes with all the bits and pieces to build a current Marine Abrams tank inside the box. The new Tamiya M1A2 that is inbound is reported to have all you need for an Army M1A1, M1A2 or USMC M1A1.
BTW Matt shut down his Full Metal Jacket site about a week or two ago. Having to maintain a photo gallery site is a bit of work and various sharpshooters out there make it too much of a hassle at times. Believe me, there are times when I want to delete my entire album.

So, if I understand this correctly, the difference btwn Army tanks and Marine is smoke gernade launchers. The Army uses those triangular blocks and the Marines those pipes like the early Army vehicles (you can find on the Tamiya Sheridan).. That's a relief, Hate to think I was missing out on something significant and had another dozen kits to buy to work on my collection.

The Marines use the same 4 tube type the Army uses on smaller tracked vehicles like the Bradley, M113A3 FOV, and most likely the Stryker. Marine M1A1s have a pair per side giving them a total of 8 tubes on each side. This and the MCD is what normally identifies an Army from a Marine M1A1 (besides markings).

I would like to get some pictures from my son, but he is stationed on a Marine airbase with no real Armour around. Last time I was there, I didn't even see a Humvee!! Just Chevy trucks and Chevy staff cars!
