I thinned Vallejo polyurethane matte varnish with distilled water (1:1 ratio) and sprayed at 20 psi on a junk model that had been treated with Future.

It didn't do anything to make the model look flat. A second coat didn't improve the result at all.

Am I doing something wrong? I used Vallejo spray can matte varnishes with excellent results in the past.

Try using undiluted as evaluate the results.

I have sprayed it undiluted with excellent results and
also diluted but it takes several coats.

Cheers,
Joe

Do you have the poly matte varnish? I have the new polyurethane matte varnishes and they are very thick unlike Model Air. I'm not sure if they can be sprayed undiluted.

I use the Vallejo Acrylic resin Matt Varnish 70-520

Don't know if it's the same stuff you got,but for me it's the best acrylic flat I have used, really deadens the gloss

I spray it straight, with no airbrush problems

Chrisk_K.

According to Vallejo, the new PolyU formula is simply more
resistant to handling and they suggest brush or airbrushing.

A little Vallejo airbrush thinner is recommended to thin
down the stuff without affecting its properties.

You may also try to apply several thin coats.

What is your AB set up...needle size?

Cheers.

It's frustrating that Vallejo doesn't publish how-to information about their varnishes at their Web site.

I sprayed the PolyU varnish with my Iwata SAR siphon feed AB w/ a .5 mm nozzle @ 20 psi. I also have an Iwata Eclipse w/ a .35 mm nozzle. I do have Vallejo thinners. I guess I thinned the matte varnish too much.

In the summer, I used Vallejo spray can matte varnishes and they worked better than anything I had ever used. That's why I bought 3 bottles of the PolyU matte varnish.

The AB nozzle size and pressure seems OK.

Try a little less thinner and see what happens.

But despite all this, do you see a matte effect at
all, even with several thin coats?

Cheers,
Joe

I've applied two coats but no matte effect whatsoever. I'll try again tomorrow.

Couldn't wait till tomorrow. I mixed 4 parts of the PolyU matte varnish with one part of distilled water and sprayed on a guinea pig model at 20 psi about 5 inches away from it. It dried very quickly and *DEAD FLAT.* Very impressive! Thanks everyone.

I had the exact same results as you with their flat varnish. I had to stop using it because of that. I'll try adding water as you did and see if it works for me. Thanks for the tip.

I've found a perfect mix for me.

1 part Liquitex Flow-Aid
20 parts distilled water
40 parts PolyU matte varnish

It sprays really well @ 20 psi and dries dead flat in a couple minutes on a surface treated with Future.

I think the Vallejo Urethane 50/50 with their AB thinner and it works fine. Love the stuff!

I used solvent based matte varnishes and primers in the past. Although they worked very well, I didn't like the toxic smell (I do have a spray booth). Gotta love the Vallejo stuff.
