More than a few on the message board rate the Tamiya Afrika Tiger I (Tamiya model number 35216) as the best tiger out there.
What modifications (if any) need to be made to show a Tiger as it would be deployed on the Eastern Front? My guess is zimmerit would be needed - and do the air cleaners need to be changed? (any aftermarket on these?)
Or as an alternative - how is the Tamiya Mid-production Tiger (Tamiya model number 35194) ?

Tamiya's Afrika Tiger kit is the Tiger I Initial Production Ausf. Afrika (#35227). I believe the Tiger I Ausf. E Early Production (#35216) is the one that can be made into a North African or Russian Tiger. This is the one you probably want.
I've got the Afrika Korps Tiger (#35227) and it is a very nice kit. I assume it could be made into a Eastern Front version by a knowledgeable Tiger person. But again, you probably want the one not marketed as the Afrika Tiger.

Rob is right, 35216 is a better choice for an early Russian front vehicle. 35227 models a specific lot of tanks that belonged to very specific units used in Tunisia. Any survivors of these units (and whether their were any or not is still debated, I believe) ended up in Italy. There are a lot of differences between these two kits.
Neither of them would have Zimmerit or the Feifel Air cleaners removed. It sounds like what you really want (Tiger 1, eastern front, Zimmerit, no Feifels) is a Tamiya Mid-Production Tiger, kit number 35194.
Hope this helps,
Scott

Sphyrna,
The Tiger u want is Tam35202 (w/Otto Carius & Crew).Mid version
If not u may directly use Tam35216 also without any modification.Early version.
But..not Tam35227 Initial prod.Afrika at all !
It's a tank used in Tunisia, especially with these air filters.

Now guys there were a few of these very early tigers in Russia used nere Leningrad in 1942...They were all grey ...Without any side skirts , they had no stowage box at first the did add panzer III or IV stowage boxes later ...tools were not stowed in the same places ,but to build one of these tanks you do need the initial version because of the two pistol ports instead of the big escape hatch...They belonged to the 502ndSchwer Panzer Abteilung..

So, what are you saying???
As it relates to the question, the tank you are describing would best be modeled by 35216 version. However he asked regarding Zimmerit, no feifels, etc... This then translates to "Mid-Production" version Tigers. At any rate, the 35227 is probably NOT the best choice...
Best regards,

Hi Peter, this was just discussed here about 3 days ago or less. Do you want to do one of the FIRST production Tiger Is sent into combat - at Leningrad? If so, you need the "initial" prod Tiger I kit - aka - the "African Tiger" from Tamiya - the initial Tiger I.
Or if strapped for cash, Italeri offers an initial version also.
No zimm was used on these whatsoever, and you'll have to search for pics on the Leningrad Tigers for stowage details - as others posted; tools, tow cables, stowage boxes, side fenders, front fenders, Fiefels or not - there were subtle differences from the Leningrad Tigers to the later-on-the-scene "African Tiger" that the Tamiya kit represents.

I think everyone has totally missed the implications of Peter's question. There are two answers:
1. As Rick and nfafan replied in regards to Peter's use of kit 35216: Yes, he can use it as the basis of an early Tiger I on the Eastern Front. This is what I think he was really going after.
2. All versions of the Tiger I served on the Eastern Front. So pick a Tiger I kit and build it.
Now all Peter has to do is decide which answer is the one he wanted.
