Collect your own!

I am using myself colelcted fern and there are enough species out there where you can use the fine tip of a bigger leaf or all the side "arms" of a smaller one.

They dry very good. Add some colour and plant 3-5 of them into a drop of wood glue.

You're welcome, Romain!
A suggestion: you may want to solder the fern stems, so better withstand the bending.
Regards
Antal

That's fractal growth for you, although I should point out that it works only for the traditional-looking types like Dryopteris and Athyrium. Other genera grow differently.

Talking of which, if you're making those Part ferns (which look like Dryopteris), don't assemble them as in the photograph. These sorts of ferns hold their fronds up from a central stem - they look like shuttlecocks. Only dead fronds lie flat, and only when they've gone completely brown.

Fractal growth, haha, thanks, I don't know how I should have find that one in the dictionnary.
I do of course set them as you say as my "fractal growth" of Dryopteris is going to play the role of Dryopteris in my dios again.

As is the most common species here in the Ardennes, it makes sense to use that freely available alternativ.

Hey Dan, another set would be from Busch. It's a model rail road company. They have a set of plastic ferns that come with 3 size of leaves. Start with the big and work to the small size. Also has mushrooms with the set. It is sold as HO scale but in my opinion it's too large and works real nice for 1/35th. They have a lot of HO scale stuff that works fantasticly in 1/35th scale. bob d

Put them under a weight during drying.
Then you assemble them "on site". I know that the tend to fall back in wood glue, either try a faster glue clear drying of course) or support them a bit. A stone or any small object should keep them up until the glue has set.
Or give them soem Viagra! :-)

Ugh, bracken!

One thing to remember with bracken is that it's unusual for a fern in having fronds coming out of the main stem as branches, with wide gaps between them. If you're depicting any other variety*, don't copy ossie262's excellent example.

* unless it's Dennstaedtia.

Hi
i going to surround a model in bracken and ferns, and a woody area . i copying a idea from where i use to live , where a tractor was grown over by Bracken, they reached nearly 4ft as well.
i unsure now how often the leaves came out of the stem i.e. if 4 ft tall do they have third set of leaves?
thanks ossie
