Hi peoples,
so this is going to sound like a rookie ball question here but im stumping myself good. so i have always dealt with acrylics for the most part but since im always trying to find something new and fun to work with i have decided to give the enamels a try. id love to use them for detail washes and blending for weathering etc now my question is what can i use to thin/blend with that wont destroy my acrylic base and i dont want to have to clear coat between layers. i have odourless mineral spirits that i use for thinning my oils paints but when mixed with the humbrol it will not blend. now if i use tamyia laquer thinner it blends beautifully but all you have to do is touch the acrylic surface and it peels the paint. so whats up? any suggestions?
thanks in advance
Jon

Humbrol enamels are oil based paints and should be thinned with
white mineral spirits or Turpenoid (a mild turpentine) only.
This product available in art shops.
If you mix them with lacquer thinner they will destroy an oil
or acrylic base coat.
Cheers,
Joe

thanks for the reply joe i guess my question is why wont the odourless white spirits i picked up work its supposed to thin oil paints and does with WN oils? one of the products at the local art supply shop is a turpenoid product but it was a yellow colour and seemed to be slightly viscous. would mineral spirits be the same as white spirits? i have that on hand though i seem to remember using it and it agresivly attacks the plastic, well more so the glued joints. eg magic tracks falling apart lol lesson leaned. maybe if i cut back on the amount applied it will work out in my favour.

Mineral spirits in USA/CAN = White Spirits in Europe
Different names for the same product.
I am surprised that the MS won't thin Humbrols. Have been doing it for years with no problems.
Cheers,
Joe

Hi Jon,
The fact that it is odorless should have no effect whatsoever.
So are you saying that Humbrols just don't thin with MS?
Just one particular color or all Humbrols?
We will eventually resolve this mystery.
Cheers,
Joe
