I don’t love the fountain neither. I went with the squirt up, because that is the type of fountain it is. Fountains that cascade down, usually have at least one “bowl” or tier that when it fills it cascades down over the edge. Here are a couple of pics to help me explain better:
I understand the type of fountain you are depecting but as in your photo , the water reaches a certain point and begins to fall back on itself. Perhaps if you were to top off the 'upward squirt' with some clear material (whatever you used to create the squirt)and mad it appear to be coming/falling back down?
The addition of the dog is a nice touch.
