Im no expert, but all i have seen were grey, except for the DAK versions. I never heard of zimmerit on the D model but it wouldnt surprise me if there was!

I wouldn't add zimmerit to any ordinary PzIV D but as for camo...well they could get some green overspray as sometimes seen in Russia and also could get some sand color added starting in 1942 .They began experimenting with camo colors around that time, especially in the Caucauses in southern Russia...Also have seen some D's in the 21st panzer division that had them repainted in dark yellow in France 1944...Of course as said before they also were repainted in Africa. hope this helps.

Thanks guys, so would a tri color camo scheme work on a panzer 4 ausf d, or would it just have been grey and green, or yellow and green, or yellow and red? I really dont like the plain grey look on any tank, its just to ordinanry. Thanks for the help.

You basically have four options for the D.

1) Dark grey and dark brown, not the red brown of 1943, but the very dark brown used pre and early war.

2) Overall dark grey

3) Either the first two with some kind of winter camouflage added, although in the first winter this would have been rare since stocks of white wash were low.

4) The early Africa scheme of yellow brown and over dark grey with or without grey-green over this. Or a slurry of mud over dark grey.

It is doubtful dark green was used on the D and certainly not the 1943 dark yellow/green/red brown. There were no D's around by that time.

Or course there are a few oddball vehicles such as the D in France 1944.

And absolutely no zimmerit.

Paul I agree with all you have said, ..... Well almost everything.
I believe though the Ausf D's were phased out by attrition in early 1944, the few that were still around, would have been repainted par the 1943 dunkelgelb order when it was passed. Pz. Reg.22 / 21.Panzer Div in March 1944 were re-equipped with 21 Pz. Kpfw IV Ausf C , with ONLY a base coat of sand yellow and no visible markings. So if these Ausf C 's were painted in this manner, what's to say the Ausf D's weren't. I

Is there any verifiable reference to say the Ausf D WAS NOT repainted in accordance to the 1943 order of Dunkelgelb ??????

SEASONS GREETINGS TO ALL !

I don't think the lack of evidence is evidence to the contrary. The pertinent issue remains: is there any evidence to support the Ausf. D being painted in the new scheme? Certainly a good modeller is a pragmatist?
