I just received a set of the exquisite MasterClub resin tracks but I need the rivet counters out their to triple check me on the pins. Half have round heads:

the other half are flat:

I think that the rounds go on the inside edge and the flats on the outside but I'd like a few thumbs up from the experts before I get 440 pins in wrong.

I haven't researched this properly, but looking at museum Tigers, I get the impression that 2 different pin ends were used.

Before the middle of 1943, I find tapered flat ends with a thin ring (Bovington museum, APG museum, 1 wartime photo).

After the middle of 1943, I find cylindrical flat ends with a wide ring (Kubinka museum, Saumur museum).

Are we talking about German ww2 tracks if they are tanks the pins were inserted from the inside and there were knocker that would push them back in if they started to come loose . Insert them from the outside and you might as well as piss in the wind . Unless there were retainers to lock them in place The different heads were just different manufactures , the function is still the same . The reason you might have received two different types of pins is maybe to keep the tracks historically correct .

No, there is definitely an inside/outside because there are only 220 of each type and you need two for each link.(these are not pins which go clear through).

Real tracks had a long pin with a rivet-style dome at one end, and a securing groove for a big circlip-type fastener at the other. They were pushed through from the inboard side, and secured from the outboard side.

The dome-shaped pin goes on the inboard side, where the real dome heads got knocked back into place by a bracket near the idler wheel as the track went round.

Same deal with MC's Panther tracks, but you really need bionic vision to tell the difference!
