Update time again!
Here's the completed engine compartment with exhaust cover plates in place and the small rain caps fitted to the exhaust pipe.
The scale thickness on the cover plates is a little off but nothing to worry about.
That's the hull now complete so we move onto the turrets next. These are incredibly straight forward and have a very limited number of parts.
First up is the 75mm gun mantlet arrangement.
The kit barrel is pretty weak. Limitations of injection molding mean this is a standard two-part barrel, the trouble is the muzzle features none of the distinctive riffling.
Lionmarc have just released a beautiful turned metal barrel which I have duly ordered from LuckyModel, hopefully should be with me soon.
The single molded turret is very impressive (please note part of the cupola has been dry fitted here).
The gun mantlet and cradle fits into an opening on the turret. The fit was a little tight and I stupidly left off part A14, this had to be added after everything was in place and has thus impaired the ability to move the gun up and down.
Next up we add the stroboscopic cupola and turret ventilation slit.
The cupola is fairly simplified in the Meng kit which is generally in keeping with the overall approach to their Char 2C.
As an addendum the stroboscopic cupola is a fairly interesting innovation and allowed the commander to view the battlefield without risking serious facial injuries (a major problem on early early tanks hence the mail face masks).
I'm sharing the following picture below for discussion purposes only and do not own the copyright!
Here's an exert from Hunnicutt detailing its use on the Liberty tank.
The only other thing to add is the turret base with the standard rotation enabling slots.
And the completed turret with the barrel as yet unglued whilst I wait on the replacement.
Next up we'll move onto smaller rear turret....

Looking really good Rob. I also ordered the metal barrel by Lionmarc. Funny thing, Luckymodel shipped my barrel, but I'm still waiting on the tank, which is back-ordered. The barrel is real nice, a definite improvement. Al

Thanks for commenting guys, pleased you like it.
She sure is a monster Richard! This this is bigger than anything else on my shelves, despite the huge size though its a very simple and pleasurable build.
Al-My barrel is still in transit, so my turret will be held up for a while, sounds like its worth the wait though, the kit option isn't really acceptable at all.

So, i've just dry fitted the gun barrel parts to get a feel for the completed turret.
The head of view highlights the lovely rivet detailing but also the inadequate barrel, crying out for replacement.
One other area that needs to be addressed on the turret are some fine vertical mould lines present on the single casting. There are four in total on each side, you can faintly see it here.
And here.
I used a selection of sanding sticks to remove these.
Next I could tackle the smaller rear turret.
Another one piece moulding, with the same vertical mould lines to remove I might add.
Theres a single ball mounting for the 8mm machine gun, same as the hull except a rounded circular mounting.
Some modification is required here. The mounting piece for the interior enables the gun to be movable, however you need to remove the small tab circled below.
This obstructs the movement of the machine gun socket. Heres how it should be.
Again theres a lower base plate for the turret.
And the completed turret.
Must be the simplest turrets i'll ever have the pleasure of building on kit, now to stick them on the hull……..

The end is nigh!
Pretty much the final task is putting the tracks together, which really are a piece of cake. Theres 67 links for each run which just click together and require no clean up. There is a slightly rough area where the tracks have been removed from the sprue however this won't be visible once they are assembled, so they're good to go as is.
Just be careful when assembling them as some of the very fine raised nibs can get crushed which means the tracks won't stay together. I encountered this on a few of them, so its best not to pull the tracks apart too often once assembled.
Luckily theres quite a few spares.
The best way to fix the tracks to the model, and you may wish to leave these off and paint everything separately (I couldn't resist putting them on), is to lay them out on a surface and then place the model on top, wrapping them around the sponson thus.
The easiest place to connect the tracks is at the front idler.
Simples.
I just needed to add the doors and name plate from earlier as well.
I just tacked the doors on for the moment as I may eventually model them slightly ajar with a German soldier inspecting the void.
The etch name plate just needs to be rounded slightly; the etch is perfectly thin enough to allow this.
She's done!
Quite a monster!
So thats construction done. I am still waiting on a Lionmarc metal barrel from Lucky Model and have only just dry fitted the kit part.
Next up will come the painting, there may be some delay here as I need to get my compressor which isn't kept in my flat, and other paints and weathering stuff. I'm also unsure of the paint scheme to go for, i'm hoping to build either 95 or 92 but can't work out whether they are single green or painted camouflage..?

Hi Rob ..Yeah I saw a picture of this one beside a St Chamond which I already thought was a big tank and it looks wimpy beside it.
Now you know you want to go with a cool camouflage scheme on this one .. Hey there are so many green tanks out there...go for it !!! Is the kit barrel really that bad that it can't be used?
Rick

Thanks guys!
Tbh Rick, yer i'd rather not do just plain green. The size of the thing makes a monotone paint finish rather challenging, theres quite a risk that it just looks dull and boring.
My inclination is to go for either No.92 or No.95, as both these tanks were abandoned by their crews and subsequently captured by the Germans. I'd like to incorporate this into a diorama with some Germans inspecting it and both tanks allow such a scene without having to build the rail bogies.
No.92 'Picardie' makes for a nice subject, and can be constructed more of less from the Meng kit (especially now that Decalomaniacs offer the decal sheet). Strictly speaking one would need to add the unditching skid at the rear and leave off the skirts, but I'll just ignore these.
(Important note: Referencing the above photo, Meng has you fit the tracks the wrong way round!!)
Quite what the paint scheme is on this tank i've no idea, it seems to be quite dirty in the above photos which obscures any camouflage if present.
No.95 'Touraine' is my other option of a non-rail abandoned tank, however this one seems to be in quite a state of disrepair when photographed.
Note the absent exhausts, possibly because the whole upper engine deck has been removed. Some sort of a-frame winch has been fitted onto the main turret as well.
Also Rick, re the barrel: The two part kit item is ok, but the end of the barrel doesn't really look right. The Lionmarc barrel cost me about £3 so its a no-brainer.

Hard to tell the camo but 95 is at least 2 colors, has the skirts and no unditching skid.. sounds like a match! Okay you can't do the dio the way you wanted but ...

Actually it does have the skid, you can just see it to the left of the second photo. I think i'll go for 92 and just leave the skirts on, my scene won't be 100% accurate but its just crying out to be displayed with some figures to reinforce the size and the lack of any French tank crew figures is what prompted my decision with the Germans.

Don't forget MiniArt set :
or even the one from Dragon :
Nemrod has released 3 sets of 1940 French tankers (2 figures per set). Verlinden, Mk35, Wolf and Royal Model make some as well... The problem is that the 2C has a 12-man crew

That was a great catch on the track direction, Rob! I sure would have mounted mine backwards if you hadn't mentioned it.
I ended up using the kit barrel. The ones I ordered still haven't shown up, and I'm on a deadline. You've got to do a little putty work to the end, and it doesn't have the rifling, but it'll do in a pinch.
Meng definitely isn't showing all the paint options. In the instructions, #90 is solid green, but there's a picture of it on the first page of this thread going down a hill in camouflage (you can just make out the "0" on the sponson).

That's quite the impressive beast. Looks like a french TOG 2 to me. I would suggest a French two tone painting scheme, but that's just me. The solid colors tend to be, like you say, excessively monotone and flat. The exception to that would be a light or medium (almost pastel) green with a heavy weathering and some solid rusting.

Thanks for stopping by guys, pleased you like it!
I totally missed the track as well, it just happened to be that I was examine the photos with the model in front of me and suddenly noticed, I'm sure many modellers will probably make this error.
re; the paint schemes, I imagine they must have had different schemes at different times. Also with the markings it looks like those tanks mobilised in 1940 lack the large coat of arms on their turrets, so I might just go with number and name on mine.

Just a small update on this before it gets a lick paint. I received Lionmarc's replacement turned metal barrel a few days ago, which is a vast improvement over the kit part.
Some modification of the mantlet is required though; the inside of the slot needs to be carved away to enable the Lionmarc barrel to fit.
The modification is quite difficult without making a mess:
Anyway, with a bit of hard work the barrel is made to fit:
Hopefully I can start painting the beast soon, just need to figure out the scheme...

Glad to hear you finally received your barrel. The ones I had ordered showed up 3 weeks too late to be used. Now I have two that probably won't get used.
I hate to bring it up, but you didn't need to cut out the barrel hole in the turret. The Lion Marc replacement fits just fine without any work, as can be seen in the attached photo.

Wow yours is looking superb Bob! Thats odd about the barrel, I couldnt get mine to fit at all, anyway its jammed in now.
I had originally ordered the barrel from LuckyModel, however after 2 months of waiting I gave up and bought one from Ebay, they seem to have dropped the ball lately.

That's kind of funny, the ones that got delayed were ordered off Ebay. I ended up having my local store order one in for me. A week after they got me one, the other two finally showed up.
Thanks for the compliment. If you'd like to see the rest of it, you can see the results here: http://armorama.com/forums/219860&page=1

Sven - It just looks that way. I'm sure Rob would agree with me when I say that because of the design and molding, it's an easy, fun build. With the possible exception of the delicate PE screens, just about any modeller should do well with this kit.
