I have just picke up a small batch of the AMT/ESCI 1/72nd shermans What version are they and what will it take to make any conversions, to get them to the more interesting variants, and are ther any conversion kits available in resin.
Any feedback on the kits or their possibilities would be greatly appreciated

The original ESCI kit had an engine. There was no interior but all hatches were separate parts. I believ this is an A1 with 75mm gun and cast hull.
The kit has great potential and was my first super-detailing effort and my first successful competitive model (Multiple first place awards in small scale armor.)
I don't know of any readilyu availabel conversions, but you might check out Cromwell Models.

Yes, Al is right. It is the M4A1 with the 75mm turret and a radial engine. I just traded one away to someone in Alaska this week. It is a very good kit, recently reissued by Italeri. It's been issued with and without the Calliope rocket launcher. I always wondered why Eduard didn't do PE for this Sherman. They made a set for the Monogram/Matchbox/Revell of Germany M4A1 76mm, which is a newer but inferior kit. I think there may be PE parts that could be of use to the Esci/Italeri kit, but since I no longer have my Esci kit at hand, I can't confirm this.
They also did a rare M4A3 75mm as well. Good kit, have fun with it.

For conversions, try this site, On The Way . Several companies make different versions based on or for the ESCI kit. This article from the site is especially useful http://www.ontheway.us/articles/shermanstory.htm
