Hi Tom,
If it isn't too late you might consider deepening the ruts under the rear wheels of the LRDG truck. The attached photo shows a truck dug in all the way to the hubs.
Since the process of unsticking likely involves a good deal of wheel spin and a subsequent cloud of sand/dust, it isn't something you'd want to do with the radio compartment open.
Cheers,
Dick

Hi Tom,
overall the dio looks great! Composition, colour palette, finish on the vehicles, super camel rider with hyperrealistic pose!! ..all well done!
Some small points (without wanting to be picky) are:
2 different kinds of palms seem more than improbable (remember, this is desert), and the aquarium plants still look like what they are: plastic!
I would add some deep shadows on the figures (harsh lighting in the desert), and I wonder if the indian chap would carry his backpack, when he is only on guard duty!?!
All in all quite a show!!!
Congratulations m8!
Cheers
Romain

Tom, looking very good (still not convinced of the camel, but that's a matter of opinion!)
I really should get round to doing something with MY Chevy trucks in the stash.
Here's a couple of images of a 30cwt from Marco Campanella
on FB:
It looks like the Black Dog stowage set. Here's a Canadian 30cwt in 1940:

Hi Tom,
I like your scene and the layout of the base. Well done. The sand channels should be painted the same colour as the vehicles and then weathered with some steel showing through. As they stand they would make one big reflection for anyone looking. The guy on the camel looks great.
It is always good to set things aside and look in a month or two for any finishing touches.
Cheers
Al

Thanks Al.
The sand channels are a quick fix.
Your absolutely right about taking a break from one project.
I have a bad habit of jumping from one to another.New kit,new interest.

Hi Tom - looks great! This has been a fun project to watch - you've mastered collecting input and filtering it to pull the whole dio together - while still keeping your overall idea intact - nice!
Cheers

Great looking dio. Always had something of a fascination with the deseert war. One observation:
I had read that the LRDG ran with their tires (or tyres, for those who speak the Queen's English, rather than the President's English) half-flat because it gave much better traction in the loose sand. If true, I think you'd expect to see a lot of sag, which I'm not noticing in the photos. There are some useful article on the web on creating sagged tires if you don't want to invest in resin wheels.

Thanks guys,
The info from members here is always welcome and very useful. This was my first North African desert dio and a lot was learned from all you guys.I've done many WWll dios in the past, but all On the European front.I've enjoyed working on it.The half full tires makes sense Mark, but everything is glued down and most of the time I can't justify the cost of AM resin sets.I have a small dio in the works, for over a year now that I planned on entering in a show here that the theme was movies or TV.I have 1 jeep done and the other still in the box.Have to get the figures right.Eventually it will be "The Rat Patrol"from the opening of every episode.I'm really dating myself but when I was a kid that and "Combat" were shows I could't miss.Netflix still has Rat Patrol for anyone who has never seen it.Back to modern for a while.Have a RG-31,Airfix quads and the Italeri HEMTT gun truck to work on.
See you soon.

Tom, thanks for this thread. I'm now looking seriously at what I can do with my Tamiya 30 Cwt trucks. If you're interested, there's an interesting FB group titled Long Range Desert Group Preservation society which is a great source of images and data. Worth considering!
