Working on a Scimitar circa 1991 Gulf War. Would a used/empty ammo container for the 30mm Rarden cannon have been re-used as external stowage container? I have a reference picture that shows two containers added to both front corners and some angle iron stowage racks attached to them running parallel to the sides. But I can't identify the container and the closest thing I could think of was a used ammo box.

Can you post the picture here? I have seen ammo boxes used as stowage containers, so it would not be a far fetched guess, I would say.

Hi Jeff,
Were the boxes anything like the one on this e-bay link?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LARGE-AMMUNITION-BOX-CASE-STAMPED-1956-TOOL-STORAGE-CASE-MILITARIA-/151247045915?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item233706c51b
I have seen wagons with these on, they are a fairly standard ammunition box used for a variety of different ammunition. 120mm rounds, mortar rounds etc just with a different liner to take the different shapes.

Page 43 of the New Vanguard publication on the Scorpion shows a Staffs Regt Scimitar just after Desert Storm with at least one 30mm box welded to the additional stowage racks.
They are still seen today on other vehicles - check out the jerrycan rack on the rear of this WMIK in Afghanistan.
Regards,
John

Malvin, does this new release have anything to do with the topic?

Rarden very possible; they were certainly used on CVR(T)s in 1982 during Op Corporate. Accurate Armour makes them in 1/35.
If you can post the photo, I may be able to have a stab at an ID for the box, as I have a reasonable amount of info on British ammo boxes.

I think most common on the front is the 120mm tank ammo bins. Here's an example:

I will scan a copy of the picture tonight and indicate the source. It looks more like the taller 30mm Rarden ammo case than the longer, lower ammo box although I have references for that type of stowage bin too.
Thank you for the input.
