Another StuG lll?? . Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the hobby store! The StuG is one of my favorites, but this is too much! Recycling previous kits in new box art - how original! Dragon intends on making a model of each real StuG ever produced .

Yeap, another STuG, but I kind of like this variant. I also like how the spare track is stored on the unit in the back ground, wrapped around the spare wheels.

It is a new, May 1943 release. I love them as well, but how much more specific are they going to get. Are we going to get the Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon version, as well as names of the production crew who assembled them? If they really wanted to do something original, they could offer a complete interior, maybe even with figures.

I love stugs as much as the next guy btu I don't see any reason to buy this new kit instead of this one:
which has magic tracks and extra bolt on frontal armour, but otherwise looks identical.

My sentiments exactly.
This new kit does not call me. The prior SmartKit with MagicTracks and schurzen and the same incomplete interior and same lack of figures will, I am pretty sure, build you a May 1943 StuG III G - you might have to find a couple tiny bits and bobs and move something around on a fender, but it seems otherwise that the "Early w/ schurzen" is pretty much the same. Of course that's me - already too many Dragon kits (and yet another hit my post-box yesterday ) in my closet and enough MagicTracks to wrap around my house... M-T which I really like. Like said above: "DS tracks? Booooo!" And I'll add gratis "hiss!"
Some will buy this because of the admittedly cool-looking box-art and others will because it's a StuG III G and maybe one wants an actual Division's - worth of StuGs on the shelf, and I'm sure some will breathe a big sigh of relief that now they can get a StuG without those nasty tedious MagicTracks... I am sure that this will be another nice Dragon StuG III G kit. Go for it, if it calls you!
Not I, Mr. D.

Isn't that kind of the point though? Why should every kit manufacturer build a kit just for a specific segment of the market? People were berating Tamiya for the Nashorn because it had vinyl tracks. Uh... how many Tamiya releases have individual track links?? Or photoetch? Or metal barrels? We wouldn't have after-market companies in droves if they did. And I think that is a good thing.

The DS tracks are fairly easy to deal with, at least for me. The simplest solution is to run a fine wire down the inside of the guide horns-flexible CA glue like Gorilla glue works perfectly, and then press to shape over the return rollers. Indy links like I had in the Amusing Hobby vk3002db kit would be perfect. I'm still saying the interior would be the best new feature.

That's a very good point: manufacturers find a consumer and if they serve that consumer, prosper.
I don't, for example, buy most Tamiya kits because they don't have the detail that equivalent DML ones do (or now Bronco, MiniArt, etc.). But Tamiya is perhaps the world's most-successful model company. So who's having the last laugh?
It's unlikely that you'll purchase this kit if you already have a bunch of Stugies in your stash. But there are plenty of modelers who don't, so the advantages of this kit, especially the interior, will prompt them to buy it.
And let's face it, Magic Tracks are a commercial failure at this point. Most modelers would rather have band tracks, and DML has been moving to DS tracks for the past 2 years. It hasn't hurt sales, so apparently a majority of y'all would rather have the band tracks than MT.

To be honest (and this has been brought up before) I wouldn't mind seeing (in ALL kits) both individual links and band type tracks.
So there's a choice and to please everyone!

Agreed, rubber band types AND indi links in every kit. Might add on a few quid or so. Personally, I love mts, they are off the sprue and just need glued. Im old skool, and had to cut them off the sprue and clean them up which was a PITA, but thats what we had to do. Or.....Dragon to sell magic tracks seperately again. Or.....Dragon to do two versions of same model - 1with ds and 1 with mt! Sound daft? Well.....I dunno. They could keep the same box but just have a sticker on front WITH MAGIC TRACKS or WITH DS TRACKS. BTW, I do like the DS tracks too, but more difficult to do sagging tracks.

I wonder if they'll ever release StuG variants in the service of armies other than Germany? I might buy one, if they did; at least that would be somewhat original.

I wonder how much extra it would cost to have both track options in the kit. I'd be willing to pay a few dollars more (as I much prefer the magic track) but I am probably in the minority. I'm sure Dragon has run the numbers and found that DS track is cheaper and/or more profitable and that is why it is in all their newer kits.

Tamiya has released a Finnish Stugie and I believe there are some resin conversion sets that would allow you to do one easily.
Again, supply & demand probably means you'll need to go with the Tamiya kit or convert one of the Dragon kits.

Jim
Jim;
Sorry, but maybe wrong stick - wrong guy! I'm a guy who actually in almost every one of these new kit threads where folks crab about "another one of these - why not X else?" is the one flogging that it's a business decision and model - and manufacturers make and sell whatever they think will sell. That's the way I see all of this entirely. I'm pretty sure I KNOW why they issue kits with DS instead of the MT, and I'm also sure I KNOW why they put out another StuG III G instead of some new-tool kit. All pretty simple, at least as I see it!. They figure this will sell and make them some money. And probably they are RIGHT!
This does not mean that I should not say I don't plan on this one, nor that I should not mention any possible "whys". I doubt that my not buying it will mean anything to Mr. D. (my favorite company, based on the 75+ of my stash of several hundred which came from the D... even if 95% of them came second-hand! ).
Manufacturers make business decisions. Buyers buy stuff that they think they want. The D is rolling away from providing link tracks in kits. I understand that decision and the models used to get there. Doesn't mean that I have to like it. I have way many more kits than I'll ever build even if I lived another century! And there are other options and many other kits that I might take up. I have always liked Dragon kits since ever I handled my first D box and looked inside. But if the new features of kits become things I like less - DS tracks - why, I have to choose, like everyone else!
As for D dropping MT somehow suggests that most modelers are actually happier with DS tracks... baloney! That's about as sensical and true as stopping in a one-horse town and finding that 4 kinds of beer - Bud, Light, Ultr-Lite, and Bud ICE - are available. You are thirsty and want a beer. If you are like me - brew many gallons of the stuff a year and dote on craft dark ales - none of these things calls you. But if I want a beer NOW, guess I'll have to pick my "favorite"! Some call this Hobb's Choice. Far as kits go, I'm well able to easily pass by all those which have DS tracks, as there are still myriad others with links, and I already have lots of these. I don't feel any pressure on this!

It's time that Dragon/DML/UML/Cyber-Hobby/Black Label* shelves its present approach of issuing variants by date and time of manufacture and just release vehicles by fahrgetell number. 9,408 StuG III kits....each with its own specific peculiarities.
*The only Black Label I'm interested in comes in fifths. Fee-Fi, Fo-Fum. Hic!

I like this new StuG, I like the DS tracks too.
But I have many other kits I'd rather buy than another StuG.
If they released another one ... I guess it sells.
Also they have to use the molds, add a few extras and maje a profit, like Trumpeter with T-62's and PT-76 and 8tn half-tracks...
Anyway we are spoiled with dozens of cool releases.

If Dragon can see profits in a German Feldgendarmerie w/Dogs figure set, what about a set of "Hogan's Heroes" figures? A match made in heaven. Who couldn't use a 1/35 scale Sgt. Schultz in a Luft Stalag diorama?
