You're right....it takes ages to build up all the images.

I have been noting this as well. Does anyone else get partially loaded pages where a few images are missing? I don't see this at work but at home it has happened a lot. I was hoping it was just something local to my browser or ISP connection though.
We do serve A LOT of images. At some point I may have to put some of the high-image pages on a diet.

Sometimes the avatar or the ribbons do not load...
Also the reply area (were you type the text to reply a post in the forum) is sometimes very slow, but this could be my SUPER slow notebook....

I'm on Road Runner so it's not that slow, it has been faster in the past.
I will get the intermitant red x for the forum icons in the middle of the lastest posts page or a certain avatar or medal.
I did notice that it seem to 'stick' to one or two sepific icons or images for each connection session. Across sessions there was no pattern though. Yesterday I noticed that General Modeling was not showing up or the new Tanker emoticon. Today - they're fine.

Most things seem normal, but over the last few weeks I have noticed it seems slow to view images in the gallery.
Of course I just checked tonight before posting this and it was fine!

It may be our apache (software that runs the web server) log file. Each request for ANYTHING (page, image, file) is written to this log file. The log is monthly so it must be getting VEWY big. In fact....
Ugg...it's like 2.1 gb.
I may need to stop logging everything.

okay...not quite that bad. The 2.1gb file is dated a few days ago. The up-to-date log file is only 202mb. So I assume that the master log is appended every few days with this log.

Yeah Apache and most any daemon that runs and writes to /var/log and its subdirectores like httpd/ are roated by your syslog daemon. You can tweak it an have it rotate the log daily.
If it is YOUR server (as in you can be root on it) do a
# man syslog
to review the options related to roation interval and do you want to compress the archived logs to conserve disk space or not.
If you really want to live on the edge go into
/etc/httpd/httpd.conf and turn off logging,
or reduce the events that are written to the log,
ensure DNS reverse lookups are off or you do a reverse query for every client IP so you can write a hostname to the log instead of the raw IP, etc etc
PM me if you want any help
Thanks for the best modeling site ever Jim, Merry Christmas !!!

Austin,
Thanks for the input. Some good ideas there. I am not sure if the conf file is set to do Reverse DNS entries or not but that would be good to check. I had actually turned off logging on the shared host we used (Interland) as that definately was a performance killer. This server has been pretty good up till now and I am inclined to think there are other factors at work (for example right now the site is running great). This machine is all ours and indeed I have full root access and can even do a remote APC power down/up.
Cheers,
Jim

Root the box and run the command "top" to view your active processes and memory usage, cpu cycles, etc...
do a #which screen
and see if you have the program screen installed,
if you do, there are a hundred cool tricks you can do with it.
Just no comparison to a Windows web server, super slick...
