Hi folks,

This was the 5th figure I originally bought for my Aussies in the Jungle Scene. However, when I looked at the match of figures he didn't quite fit being slightly too undressed. It is the Hornet & Wolf white metal figure, but having half started him I thought I'd do him as a stand alone on a recycled plinth.

Anyway, a little progress made on him over the last few days. Perhaps sometime in the future their white metal figures might reappear in resin, they had some excellent figures. Not 100% sure but I believe they may have sold their figure range on?

Cheers

Hi Alan,

congratulations on the painting!! I've got the figure in my stash too!

I knew a Burma veteran for many years and I recall one thing he was absolutely strict on: action in the jungle means long sleeves and long trousers! Too many dangerous plants around he said!

Cheers

Alan

Looking good, but a few thoughts:
1. He should be wearing at least shorts.
2. He's far too clean.
3. It's quite possible that long sleeves would have been necessary at some point as the trail rises to a tad over 7,000 feet at its highest point, but generally not necessary, as the climate is rather akin to the inside of a steam bath for the most part.
4. You might like to check if his uniform should be green or faded khaki, as I'm not sure that green uniforms were on general issue then.
5. I think he's carrying too much gear - most pics of troops in action on the trail show them wearing little more than a haversack, basic pouches, and waterbottle.

Just my 10 cents worth.

Regards

Rob

Hi Romain and Rob,

Thanks for the thoughts. I assume the figure was modelled about to be crossing a river hence the lack of trousers which are rolled up in his small pack atop the large one to keep things out of the water.

I don't have much of a problem with the shirt only and rolled up sleeves, depends on where he is, same detail with the gear, he fits the pics I've seen kit wise.
He's clean because he is a WIP with just some basic colour added, I'll check on the khaki shirt though. If necessary I can change it or move him to another setting.

Thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Being an Aussie and a keen student of the Kokoda campaign I am really enjoying Alan's work here. On the issue of no trousers, many of the poor buggers who served in that campaign suffered terribly with dysentery, which of course means very bad and constant diarrhea. It was just way easier (and faster!) and perhaps more hygienic? to just wear no trousers - despite the jungle conditions. This is well documented in many texts as well as pics. The Hornet and Wolf figure is historically accurate.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Many thanks for the information and the feedback. Having suffered from dysentery when stationed in the Sinai I know it is no laughing matter, as every second counts . I too believe the figure to be historically accurate based on everything I've read so far.

I'd really like to see this chap in resin along with a few more on the trail guys and a pack mule or two.

I want to add a few leaves to the vine and water, and perhaps a small flowering plant growing from the log but hadn't planned much else as the figure rather than the base is the focus.

First attempt at a light beard, which I rather like.

Cheers

Hi folks,

This will never be a show stopper but I do like this figure. A little touch up on the base and I'm probably about done here.

Cheers

Al

no way... quite like the differnt skin tones on the legs, the base is rahter simple, but does itīs job really god.

BUT pics are... suboptimal. a bit dark around the fig, and itīs a bit too far away... or do I need glasses?

Hi Fabian,

Thanks for the feedback. Photo wise, closer than the length of my hand and the pictures turn out in a blur.

This is the first time I've done a figure as a stand alone. First beard also lol.

Cheers, I though for a while I was posting to myself.

got the same problem with the camera on my mobile... It has no "Macro"-Mode (at lest itīs called so here)... maybe you can switch this on (unless you haven`t done that )...
What does help (sometimes) is to cut out the figure in the pic (you can do that even with the Windows Gallery)
all that just in case you havent tried...

Hi Fabian,

Thanks for that. I had a footer about with the camera and there is a super close up option. Too much sun at the moment but I'll have a play with that later.

Thanks
