It's probably already got a thousand forums about it but how do you upload a profile photo as I am struggling

Simple, really.

In the upper right hand side of the screen, click on settings.
Then click on modify profile. On the next page, you'll see on the right side you'll see a section labeled "My Photos".

Under custom avatar, click on the upload photo. The next page after that gives you instructions on how to upload a picture to use to the gallery and size requirements.
