Hi guys,
I have HobbyFan FAV and have no idea of what would be the correct color for the First Gulf War.
I would appreciate if someone can provide Tamiya or Gunze acrylics references.
Thanks in advance,
Angel

Hi;
For Tamiya, I would look at Buff or Tan in there Color Range. I am not sure what Gunze has in there Colors so I can not say ! You mite take a Look at some Good Reference source and Go from there.
GOOD LUCK; MIKE.

I would also note, that the painting of the vehicles during the first Gulf War was crude. I was stationed at Norton AFB, where a lot of Marines and Army came through to board our C-141 for the deployment, and most of the vehicles looked liked they were just sprayed with no masking. Tools were painted, wheels had over spray on them, etc. It was a similar color to Tamiya Buff, maybe a little darker.

In my humble opinion, Testors Model Master Modern Desert Sand #1963. I really think it’s the closest straight out of the bottle, er can, for modern US vehicles. I decanter it and shoot it through my airbrush

The MM Sand is great for the more recent events OIF/OEF, but the colour that we used over there was more yellow-ish. Think Tamiya desert yellow mixed with Buff. If memory serves Gino had a formula for a really good match.

I have been trying to match that color since 1992/93 with the Abrams, Bradley, the scud launcher etc. I found out that it's having good reference material an the lighting you use or bring it to a contest or just your own pleasure I like model master stuff. But with the new paints an weathering stuff you could do a lot.
Happy modeling

Also note when the vehicles returned, they were very weathered, alot of the green showing through.

my research shows FAVs to be painted Flat Black. you could go the nato black route. these vehicles were primarily used at night.

First off, the Hobby Fan kit is not a US NAVY SEAL FAV that was used in ODS, but a US Army DPV (Desert Patrol Vehicle). It was not used in ODS, but was tested by the 9th ID Light when they were testing the High Technology Light Division (HTLD) concept in the '80s.
SEAL FAV.

US ARMY DPV.

The DPV was in MERD-C camo. The FAV was in overall flat black.
For ODS colors, most vehicles were quickly repainted a sandy color either before they left the states or when they arrived is Saudi Arabia. Those painted in the states were mostly done with CARC Tan, which is closely resembled by Testors Model Master Sand (FS 33531). Those painted in Saudi Arabia were quickly painted as they came off the ships and aircraft with a locally bought sand colored paint that was not very durable. These are the ones you saw coming back faded and worn-through to the green and NATO camo underneath. A close match to this color is Testors Model Master US Army/Marines Gulf Armor Sand.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for all your help guys.
Then I will have to paint HF kit in MERD-C camo.
Can somebody help me with paint references for Tamiya or Gunze acrylic paints? Over here, Spain and China, I cannot find Testors Model Masters paints and besides that I prefer acrylic paints.
Best regards,
Angel

It's not Gunze or Tamiya, but Life color makes an acrylic MERDC paint set. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LifeColor-Acrylic-Colour-Set-NATO-MERDC-Camouflage-22ml-x6-LC-CS02-/400509803665?pt=AU_Toys_Hobbies_Model_Kits&hash=item5d403e9c91
