I've been practicing German Oak Leaf and things are getting better. Slowly.
Here's a recap of my progress:

I know I still have a way to go, especially on getting the overall design of the "land masses" right. But I would greatly appreciate any feedback and/or techniques for getting this tricky pattern right.
Thanks!!

I finally found a better way to get some nice uniform in size dots for these patterns. They sell paint brushes at art stores that are made for making dots!! Who knew?
For years I struggled and all the while the answer was simple.
Go figure.

Interesting! Do you have the name or more info about these? Why are they different than just using a toothpick? I have to run to the art store today anyway, so interested to hear more on how to find them!

They come in all levels of quality from sort of cheap to expensive, depending on the material used for the bristles. They are in the artist paint brush racks and mine was labeled"dot brush".
ACMoore was the store.

A 10-0, or 20-0, brush will also give a very fine line or dot.

So I updated with a third revision... I would love to hear what people think. Here's the link to the full post:

And here's the latest pic. (It's a test fig, don't worry about location... I know these patterns were only applied to smocks)
