Hi Tijmen,
Welcome to Armorama .
Ok first of all, good for you that you want to make a dio, but you'll need to be a bit more specific. Like where, Allied or German, what kind of moddeling experience do you have,.... ?

Welcome to the wonderful world of dioramas!
For 1/72 scale I would start with figures. Research the figures that are available for the Axis. Go to Military Hobbies.com or which ever webshop you select and find out what 1/72 scale figures are available. Due to thier scarce nature they will guide you a story line.
Then research the AFVs.
I think you are stuck with scratch building your environment as far as buildings go. You may be able to find some RR trees and bushes etc. Maybe some HO buildings will suffice (not sure though).
Tools you won't need anything special just some good hobby knives and small brushes.
An airbrush will be useful (but not required) for the figures. That scale they usually come in a soft plastic that is very difficult to paint with a brush without basecoating with an airbrush first.
I am doing a WWI scene now with a Mark IV and some figures. Scratch building the base and got the IV from ebay. They are fun and fast to build.

While HO is 1/87, if you don't put figures too close to doors, you should be able to get away with it. I'd check Walther's for a selection of buildings. You should be able to get a fair sahre of figures, though they're soft plastic and wil be a bit harder to paint and you'll have to shave them from their bases. There's a fair share of military vehicles in 1/72 so that should not be a great problem.
