Help needed painting packs and rolls

Hello all,

Can anybody share advice on how to paint things like alice packs, duffels, and bed-rolls? So far I have them base coated with a very dark green or dark grey. I was planning on using oils mixed with Humbroll paints for the subsequent coats, but I'm not entirely sure how much lighter I should make my color mixes, etc.
