Sure is a nice looking set. It'd be nicer if Dragon would put 3536 back in production so folks would have a SEP (The Tamiya kit is O.K., just not in the same class IMO) to use it on.

It is part of the MILES (Multi-Integreated Laser Engagement System) 2000 system used for force-on-force exercises. Basically it is a giant Laser-Tag system for vehicles and personnel.

Fun fact:

you can turn an M16 laser transmitter into a rifle-mounted "WMD"/"God Gun". Insert a jumper wire into the J1 and J2 connector found on the plug located at the rear of the transmitter and you are able to take out anything equipped with MILES gear, from a platoon+ enemy force (this includes annoying CO's, First sergeants, butterbar platoon leaders and PITA platoon sergeants) to any vehicle/helo (including tanks, APC's, Blackhawks, Apaches, etc.) without having to fire your weapon to activate the laser.

My old unit (A/1/6 INF), along with 1/54 INF was part of the MILES system test and evaluation program at Hohenfels back in early 1983. Being inquisitive guys, in a rhesus monkey-like way, we performed "experiments" in order to find out what kind of neat crap we could make it do. Well, we hit the jackpot with the jumper wire discovery. Also, if you were smart, you'd use NVG's to spot and target opfor using MILES at night. The laser, although invisible to the naked eye, looks like a bright line and you can trace this back to point of origin.
