Hi all,
This is very early the dio stage. I want to show the RG-31 at base having maintenance work done. Won't get into details tonight, but will update tomorrow.

Looks like it is coming along nicely. I like the idea and the setting.

If you're portraying Canadian soldiers you might want to work on the cam pattern a bit (unless they're still in progress?).

I know Arid CADPAT is a bear to paint, but it can be simulated with lots of small dots!

Looks like it will be developing into a nice scene.. is the bare chested guy going to be washing it with a hose? That would look cool

What kind of building will this be? I ask because I was thinking of doing an on-base scene, but I have no idea what bases are like on the inside.. were they basically built where old Iraqi aemy bases used to be.. or did the Americans - or Canadian or whatever - just choose any large compound to turn into a base... or did they use pre-fab type buildings to set up a base wherever?

Hey guys.

Thanks for the pics Jim.I need to work on the cammo.
Hisham,The shirtless guy is going to be waiting to wash the RG.That's the hose around his feet.As for the buildings. My searches haven't turned up much.I've seen both, but mainly the dome style tent like buildings. The kind you see advertised for portable garages.Far too large for my base.So I'm taking some artistic licence here going with a prefab or existing one.

In Iraq, we occupied a lot of old Iraqi military facilities that would look like your buildings. In Afghanistan, we are mostly using the prefab domes and tents, etc. as there are not a lot of bases we could have occupied, so we have built them.

Progress has been slow, plant the wife's flowers etc.The only drawback to nice weather.
Done some painting ,added the hose faucet ,some trim and working on the cammo. The door knob and faucet knob are pin heads.More to come

Yeah but I know Canadians we occupied old abandoned schools as a Combat Outpost. So may be it can be along those lines. But FOB's and bases were prefab building. An example would be Sea Containers while in Kandahar province. As for maintenance, the RWS and POL would be checked mostly weekly. Keeping your A/C and weapon clean was a huge issue with the "moon" dust. Personally I would take out the guy under the RG-31. And as for vegetation in the area, would also be missing. Unless you where in the valley. Grass was very very very seldom. It only rains once in Kandahar for a year. And that is during the winter months. 40 days straight when I was there. Pretty sure I was going to build an Ark by the end of my tour. As for pigment choice, MIG Gulf War Sand is pretty close to Afgan moon dust. Just make it a thin wash over whole unit.

Cheers,
Tom

Oh on other note, our under shirts were Coyote Brown, not Olive Drab unlike in Canada.

Well taken Tom,
The t-shirts are now brown. The grass I'm toning down with browns to make it look dead.If it's having maintenance, why on earth would I take the mechanic out?
Thanks for the input.

I'm pretty much done with this.At least for a while it's going on the shelf.Need to add some outdoor lights. The water from the hose is a little too thick.Tools are all stretched sprue flattening at ends.
