Hi,
I seem to recall reading about this before but I don't remember where. I saw a photo in the current issue of TIME magazine of a humvee with what looked like a steel armor shield above the windshield. It looks like it used to offer some protection to the roof gunner. Is this something that is improvised in the field or is it a new addition to the armor? Just curious.

Durning 9/11 I saw several Air Force Hummers with what was an almost turret-like structure of steel plates. I think a lot of the MP vehicles also carry this set up. I don't think it's a field mod.
Yeaterday I some pics of a National Guard hummer in iraq modified with what looked like a seat out of an Iraqi chopper and some armor plate which has a place to mount a SAW. It was in the bed of the Hummer . Of course the light went on for a future project!!!

Some time back on Hyerscale there was a photo of several Humvees and Abrams that had set up a road block after a ambush and all the Humvees had some type of well sloped shield mounted in front of the .50 caliber. The picture was from a distance so I could not make out the details of them. I have not seen any photos of the arrangement since. I Would like to know more about them. (:-)

Salt6 nice photo, is it just me or is the shield mounted to the turret ring verses attached to the weapon? It would sure add intrest to a Humvee model.

A while back I asked on AFV-News about gun shields used in Kosovo and received some flak for it as if it was a dumb question that EVERY gunner would want shield protection!

But this was not the case, said Army soldiers. The shield prevents the gun from being elevated easily, so said a U.S. Army responder. The shield normally makes the gun droop because of the weight on the front (IIRC). So to bring it horizontal requires more effort on the part of the gunner to lift the gun up by the handles. This is why some gunners opt to leave them off in sentry situations in order to bring the M2 on target a lot faster. You can double-check on AFV-News again, if you wish, since I don't remember my question too well.

The armored box is a non-standard item from O' Gara, I believe. Another fledging company makes something similar, but being startup, I don't think they made many, if any, yet.
