Is here any hard and fast rule as to which tracks were fitted to specific Abrams models ... chevron-type and 'Big Foot' rectangular-type? I have a Revell kit of the M1A2 which includes the chevron tracks, and a Dragon kit of the M1A1 w/mine plough with the rectangular type. I am not sure which is correct ...

According to this document http://www.gao.gov/assets/220/213784.pdf, the first T-158 tracks (a.k.a. Big Foot ) were fielded at the end of 1990 (for the M1A1)...AFAIK, the older T-156 tracks could still be found at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. I guess both types of tracks could be seen on A1's or A2's equally.

...even though M1A2's have most usually been fitted with T-158 tracks from the beginning...But it's just a guess

Most of the Abrams up to and including through Desert Storm have the "chevron" type. After desert storm they big foot style became common.
