Hi Jerry. Thanks for checking in.
I made some more progress on the GAZ-AAA today — added on the clear parts, some touch-up, etc.; that one is very close to finished — happy about that! Now I'll need to bring the GAZ-MM closer to that level of weathering — currently, it has the wrong mud splatter for this particular diorama — easy fix.
Tomorrow, I may build a mock-up of the ice/snow surface which will include a cut-out hole for positioning of the sinking GAZ-MM. Since I'm not quite certain of what the X-Y-Z dimensions will be, this should help me with visualizing the possibilities — we'll see.

Hi Mike -
lots of interesting stuff in that collection of pics - it's really a lot to take in!!!
It took me a look or two to "get" the various type of weathered surfaces you show. You've developed an interesting method - I like the results!
I might tho, consider de-rusting some of it - at least in a few places. The rust reads a bit like a "pattern" (albeit very well done!)in a few locations, like an intentional camouflage(?) - not sure if that makes sense?
More direct response, maybe paint over the rust in a few places...?
As always, I'm interested in seeing how you will pull all of this off!
OK - sorry if an altogether unclear response!!! keep building!
Cheers
Nick

Nick,
Makes perfect sense! I thought the weathering looked a bit overstated. I tend to get carried away with the chipping tools and next thing you know ... not exactly what I had in mind!
One thing I've noticed is how Vallejo Model Air vs. Model Color reacts differently to Vallejo Chipping Medium — not always desirable results. Still, with all the layer buildup on this one, it was kind of an interesting experiment. I am gonna' fix it though.
On another note: The whitewash layer is intended to look like a bad winter cammo job (rushed into service) on top of the green base coat. I hope somehow, that will come across in the end.
Thanks for taking that second look.

There, it's done! — just kidding! LOL!
Here you go... I just slapped-together this quick mock-up of the diorama base. for dramatic effect.
Note: The GAZ-MM will be submerged deeper than what is shown here. The left/front tire will be touching down and the right/rear corner of the bed will be flooding.
The 1/48 scale truck (not shown) will be completely submerged at lake bottom, somewhere near the upper/middle or right quadrant.
Making any sense? Comments welcome.

Whoa!!! You really have something here!! Yes, it's clear this is a mock up - but great idea!! I like the torqued look of the truck being wracked over the broken ice -
I like the guy jumping from the front truck -
you might give yourself a bit (just a bit!) more distance between the two trucks - I can imagine the second one sliding to a stop into the first, but it might then also be falling through the hole in the ice - the bit of distance might help convince that the second one is still on top of the ice.....and clearly in peril of disaster!!
Keep going!
Cheers

Oh - yeah - I like the left front wheel above the ice. Maybe a part of the truck's frame got hung up on the ice! and caused the twist - more tension! Like more disaster from the breakthrough is inevitable and the driver knows it!

Yeah ... I didn't mean for them to bump together. I originally had space between the two (see below), then I started loading up the figures and things got moved around.
Thanks for your comments!

I considered that, as it creates more distance for the driver to jump from the running board onto the ice. ... I'm evil like that!

I really need to check this thread more often... Great work on the figures, really dynamic. Especially liking the guy jumping out of the cab. The trucks themselves are a real piece of art too.
Looking forward to what's next!

Lookin good mike! The frosted glass is a nice touch!! I really like your tires and wheels too - interesting color combo - and, of course - nice weathering!!!
Back to the dio yet? Or one more truck to go?

As has been said already,I really like this concept. Very imaginative!
You are making a lot of progress and the idea of the forced perspective is cool!

Thanks for the props Guys!
Not yet. The complexity of the dio base keeps churning in my head. I'm not nearly as fast as you, Nick! I have a little weathering left to do on the last truck and I still have the figures and some cargo to finish painting.
In addition, I've been diverted to building some of my stash kits in order to hone my (lack of) skills. When I actually get to that base, it's gonna' get ugly around here!

Dammit Jerry!
You've given me an idea with your dead German Colonel ... more peril on the way!
I'm thinking ... this guy moving away from the right side of the GAZ-MM desperately trying to save the cargo while slipping on ice. Also, he'll be looking in the same direction that the DSHK gun crew is firing.
Let me know what you guys think.
Cheers!🍺

I'll be fixing those right arms, hands, etc. — lots of putty to follow!

A small update:
The two new soldier additions for the starboard side. I think they help balance out the overall scene.
The to do list:
Finish truck No. 1 detailing/weathering/stowage
Finish figure detailing/painting
Build surface base layer (ice/snow)
Create fractures/holes in ice
Create wind-drift and traffic wear on ice
Weather lower areas of vehicles to match conditions
Position vehicles/figures
Build lower base (sandy bottom)
Position truck No. 3 (1/48 scale)
Build base enclosure (PlexiGlas box)

Hi Mike
I would like to give you my first impressions of just looking at your latest pics (since i only now jumped in to the thread without any backstory).
So basically, my first impression was that a truck has gone through the ice and that the crew is scrambling to rescue it. Only after that i realized everyone was looking of base and after that i caught the AA gun loaded on the second truck. This made me go "hmm, weird" and i started to go back through the log to look for the back-story.
What am i saying is that I think this diorama could be a real gem when finished but I would urge you to focus more on giving the viewer clues to the drama unfolding and hint the attacking air craft in as many ways possible.
At the moment it is not immediately clear what's going on (to me that is, but then again im a bit slow... )
Maybe a dead body, puff's of snow and ice from an ongoing strafing run etc. etc.
I do realize this is very much WIP so you probably just thought about this stuff already. Just wanted to give you the impressions of a pair of fresh eyes as i know how easy it is to forget these things when you are working hard on a scene and getting used to the setup.
Keep up the good work!

@ Johan – Thank you for lending your "fresh eyes!"
Yes, you've pretty much got the basic gist of the scene. However, note that this is only a crude dry fit of elements on a paper cutout for now.
There are still several items that are in my mental to do list' — one of them, as you mentioned, "puff's of snow and ice from an ongoing strafing run." The DSHK gun will be aimed at a steaper angle than it is currently, seemingly at an attacking aircraft. Truck No. 1 will have the side-gate dropped down for unloading of cargo as water is flooding the cargo bed — lots of shifting cargo as well. I thought of a dead body but I opted for the two soldiers struggling to move cargo while under attack from above and as ice deteriorates beneath them. However, death will be implied by makeshift crosses — markers where other trucks had gone under.
Here are a few images that I'm using for reference.

@ Romain – Thanks for stopping by and thanks for sharing the uniform image!
