I use it as a light-duty filler applied with a paint brush, and I clean my paint brush in lacquer thinner (ordinary hardware store variety - Kleen Strip).
(Same nylon bristle brush that I use to apply cement and thinned Testor's Green Stuff with.)
If I wanted to thin the Mr. Surfacer for spraying, I'd have no hesitation to use lacquer thinner to do so.
There may be other better thinners, but from my "cave man" view, I think that lacquer thinner would work just fine. Probably the same for acetone, or even a mix of the two if the acetone was too "hot."

I've thinned it with 91% IP alcohol for brushing, never AB'd it.

I use Mr. Hobby Self leveling thinner in about 50/50 mix to thin and spray Mr. Surfacer. It goes down smooth, no issues.
Edit never AB the 500 but have the 1200 and 1500.

I believe the Mr Surfacer 500 is for filling gaps etc. now if you want to spray the surfacer go with the 1000 or 1200 and lately they have the 1500 simply smoother finishes . They even have a red oxide surfacer which is close for the German red primer for vehicles . It's just the smell , some people find it too strong .
