After applying the hairspray and then over coating that , how long a period of time before you can not remove the topcoat . I guess it would depend on the cure time of the top coat ? And I would like to try this technique on an engine so anything to worry about if you apply the hairspray with a brush , it won't remove paint will it , maybe craze the paint ? Do you have to thin the hairspray and what's do you use . I've never tried it before so just need the heads up .

The technique I have used is to overspray the base coat with pledge or some other varnish, then let that dry completely (a couple of days) before applying the hairspray. I have found that applying several coats of hairspray with a few minutes drying time in between achieves the best effect. As far as i know there is no min or max time to wait once you have applied your top color coat before you can start scrubbing it away; however, I work only with Acrylics so I don't know what kind of results one might get with enamels or lacquers.

Now the question of using a brush to apply the hairspray ? Will the hairspray craze acrylic or cause any problems ? , Does the brand of hairspray matter ? Does it have to be from a pressurized can or one of those from a spray pump do ?

I've used an aerosol can, so can't speak to how well a pump or brush would work but can't see a reason why they wouldn't. As far as interaction with acrylics, there should be no issues. You have to varnish the undercoat so it doesn't come off with the top coat, so that should prevent any potential problems.

I decant hairspray into a small container and then into my AB. Much easier way of controlling its application and AB is easily cleaned with water.

Now if you get hairspray in to an area you don't want any of it in there can you just use water and wash it off ?

You should be able to get it off okay, on the other hand unless you get it on something clear like a canopy it shouldn't do any harm to leave it--just don't scrub that spot when you start your weathering.

Absolutely agree, do not leave the last coat for too long. I did (have tried just once) and it hardly came off even using a toothpick
