Hi,

I have a couple of them in my stock.. they look quite good basic kits as they appear correct. Kit is old and therefore expect to do some improvements on it. trails for rockets are the best part of the kit, according to me ( a couple of them abandoned may be one destroyed, let's say winter 41/42, with some Dragon skying troops.. this is my idea for a dio)

Happy modelling

It's a nice kit, especially for it's age, but be forewarned that it is NOT the WWII version of the Katyusha. The WWII Katyusha was based on the Studebaker duece and a half that were sent to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease.

The big difference between the kit truck and the real-deal are the front fenders. They shoud be squarish, not rounded like the kit fenders. Here's a link to a page full of Studebakers, so you can see what I mean: http://www.autogallery.org.ru/gstuder.htm

The kit truck is a later version used from the 1950s on. It was used all over the world by lots of different countries. The way I understand it, the Soviets liked the Studebaker so much, they decided to copy it, making a few design changes in the process -- hence the rounded fenders.

There was an article some time ago (years) about how to back date this kit. I don't remember if the author used an aftermarket cab or modified the kit cab. I'll see if I can scare it up when I get home.
(Yep, working Saturday, again)

Hi all!

Just to toss in my two cents... The Studebaker BM-13s had squared off fenders. other makes, International, Chevy, GMC and Ford all had rounded fenders like the ones on Italeri's model. However, the Italeri model is a ZIS truck (of Soviet manufacture). I can't tell what year the truck is. I am waiting on some books from my local library to follow up on it. But don't cut up your model yet.

I can tell you right off it's not a ZIS-5 or ZIS-6 truck. They had a boxy cab. The ZIS-5 and ZIS-6 models were early in the war ('39-'41). It is possible this truck is a later war ZIS production model. It's definitely NOT supposed to be a Studebaker or other lend-lease truck. It's a soviet truck (you'll not the manufacturer's logo stamped into the kit plastic for the front hood. looks like 3NC (with the "n" reversed). Those are the Cyrillic letters Z, long E and S. Anglicized it's ZIS). Anywho... here's a good site with pics of the lend-lease Katyushas.

Reading in the one post on the trucks they said in post war the Zis truck was an almost exact copy of the International K7 on the front.
Another thing I learned today is I never ever knew that Ford and Marmon were combined to when it mentioned the Ford/Marmon-Herrington. Boy the wealth of knowledge that can be obtained here is amazing.

I have assembled the Zvezda ( I suspect Italeri kit is a remake) Katysha a while back- ti's a pretty good kit with many parts, however there is no engine or transmission included. The cab assembles from different pieces, unlike the new Trumperer kits

So, I can now, with absolute surety, confirm Hollowpoint's analysis of the Italeri Katyusha. It is indeed a post-WWII kit. The truck is the ZIS 15, which began production in 1948. So, top make the kit accurate, one could backdate it to a lend-lease US model by altering the venting, grille, and fenders. All the ZIS trucks produced during WWII were boxy little things with square cabs and flat grills. This later ZIS truck was clearly pattered after US lend-lease vehicles. Sorry folks!

Here's a link to more info about the truck http://www.autogallery.org.ru/zis151.htm
