Please note that late style headlights are just one of the modifications associated with Mod.B version. There are quite a few other differences between original M48A3 and Mod.B version (different fenders being one of the biggest). Dragon now have kits of both versions available.

it's the second release Mod B version I have, and for some inexplicable reason, tho prolly not to dragon, the M60 type light lenses are included but not the housings . while I have the headlights from my Gal Batash, I'm not sure there're accurate enuff . havn't really seen many pix with that type headlight.
as for the 11th Cav, just how accurate is tam's decal for that unit?

The second release in NOT a Mod.B. Only the first release was a Mod.B. The late type housings were only released in the first, Mod.B, release and they were on sprue B that included other Mod.B specific parts. The second release only include the early type lights (yes, the late type lenses are included, as they were on the same sprue as the cupola and some other clear parts).

Pawel,
Good point in referencing the reinforced fenders as an identification feature. Most folks associate the G305 riser for the M1 Cupola as the definitive feature for the Mod B version of the M48A3. The riser started showing up in RVN in 1967 and could be added to deployed tanks by their unit maintenance teams. DML’s second M48 release is almost perfect for a USMC tank or an Army non Mod B of the 1967-68 period, less reworking or replacing the engine grill doors, which have the Mod B reinforcements (same issue with the second “upgraded” M103A2 kit.) I am contemplating a sandbagged 3-4 Cav tank, if I get the second M48 kit.

I'll never understand the logic of dragon. they release a M48A3 Mod B and fail to include the searchlight and mantlet cover. then they re-release the same tank to include said missing parts, but they remove a sprue, B, which had the later headlights and whatever else was on it. now, to top all that off, neither kit has the unarmored engine grill doors. could someone explain this to me ? of the 3 M48s I have the only one I'm certain of being an early A3 is Tamiya's, before converting it to an A1

It is very simple: there is no one at Dragon who really understands differences between M48 variants and what is needed to correctly represent in-service tanks. And they obviously don't care enough about modern subjects to invest time and money in hiring external experts.

Well said from a knowledgeable source.
If Dragon chooses not to do a first rate job out of the box, then it will be their loss in the long run, if not outright with loss of income on a particular kit it will be with modeler confidence.
IRT the M48 kits, I can fix many of issues with the Mod B with spares, some PE, and epoxy putty. Nothing is perfect OOB and the upgrades are my favorite part of the build. Starting with a good base is preferred - I iwll take either of the DML M48s over the 30 YO Tamiya M48, which I have converted to a Mod B in the past. It is all about the equation of cost + time, money = satisfaction.

yeah, thank frak for AM. waiting on DEF's update set, mainly for the mantlet cuz the kit version, with cover in place, is just too big around. no room to fit a driver. what dml shoulda done was just add the missing parts to the current box, and those shipped/sold prior to this, make the parts available at the retail level since they'd have a reasonable idea as to who would need them.
I'm pretty sure if it were a German tank it'd be damn near perfect. kinda tired of ww2. wonder if they know it's not the only war fought
