Hi guys,
I bought a gallon of Windsor Newton white spirit last year, and have been using it on and off for oil washes. I paint with acrylics. I recently got some advice from an experienced modeler who said that White Spirit was much HARSHER than odorless turpenoid, and that white spirit could attack acrylics and plastics. I thought that the order of solvent strength was Natural Turpentine > Turpenoid > white spirit?
Having said that, so far I have not experienced any issue with the white spirit attacking paint or plastic, other than it dissolving my decals when I forgot to apply varnish.
The other question I have is whether anyone has experience using Krylon satin varnish as a protective coat?

Yes, I'd say it's way too harsh. Don't use it on Tamiya or Italeri kits as spirits trapped in corners such as suspensions will make the plastic extremely brittle and fragile. I normally use 'low odor thinners', sometimes called 'sansodour' (means the same thing). Even then, I dry the wash off as quickly as possible by placing the model in front of a fan.

I concur with Steve. Years ago I tried to remove the paint from my figures and some vehicles with mineral spirits (white spirits), it turned the styrene white and it crumbled! Perhaps styrene today is better but i would not risk it.

Lighter fluid is basically harmless to any paint and plastic. It also evaporates very quickly plus it does not smell bad.

I normally apply a coat of future before using any AK enamel products. I have had no issue with AK White Spirits, even over some acrylic paints and weathering products.
