Hi, I need some advice on how to camoflage a Tamiya Sd.Kfz 251/1. I would like to paint it in the "ambush" scheme, and then winter camoflage it with some kind of whitewash so that the original cammo shows through in some places. I'd like to place it in muddy conditions to try some of the mud techniques I've been reading about on this site. Since I am not a history buff I can't be certain that this is historically correct. I know that my model (D) came out around 1943, and I know that it was used by pretty much by all panzer divisions. If someone has an idea of where and when I can place a winter camoflaged model D I'd be very interested in learning more.

Thanks H.
:-)

Hi HeffaK;
In my humble opinion, the ambush camo scheme originated so late in the war that white winter camo was hardly used anymore. The last winter 44/45 was very mild especially on the Eastern Front so white was not used much. Also with the quickly fluctuating fighting conditions, the time to re-paint vehicles was not available. Some vehicles were used in combat with only dark yellow paint, or even camo applied over the red-brown primer, as in the Ardennes. But, as they say, anything goes. So a hastily and scruffy coat of white could be applied. As an afterthought, both fronts were reduced to the more forested regions of both Eastern and Western Europe so the sand/red-brown/green camo would have been more appropriate to the terrain.
