On either side of the AAVP7-A1 there are two vertical posts which appear to be supports for the large roof hatch when fully opened. I notice in certain photographs that these posts have rectangular recesses towards the top of the posts. Are these periscopes? Examining interior views of the vehicle, I can see no evidence of the lower end of periscopes.

Looks empty, with a drain hole at the bottom. Funny thing is I always assumed they were periscopes too

Ah, you may well be correct. I have noticed that the posts are different, depending on the version of the vehicle. As I say, there does not appear to be a viewing piece for a periscope inside the crew compartment.

Howdy, the posts are supports for the roof top hatches when they are opened. The original LVTP-7 had one on either side and when the A1 was fielded it had two. It is a hollow aluminum tube with a rubber bumper on top.
