I'm making a conversion of adding a German AA gun to a LRDG truck. I was wondering if such captured equipment would have had it's former unit insignias painted over, or crossed out or what. I though that maybe they wouldn't have had time to paint the whole thing so they might just cross out with paint. Any ideas?

Hello from your neighbor to the North. In my very first post I mentioned that I had an interest in captured vehicles. So I went through my books to get you an answer. In the Schiffer book "Captured Armored Cars and Vehicles in Wehrmacht Service in World War II" It looks like they did a little of everything. From leaving all of the markings on the vehicle and just using a German flag for air recognition to completely re-painting the vehicle and adding all new German markings. So I would say that you can do what ever you like and it will be acurate. I hope that this helps you out. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. I enjoy going through my books so I will be glad to research something for you.
I would have answered your post sooner but they changed the Internet usage policy at work so I can only check out "Armorama" at home now!!
Please post some pictures of your project when its finished. I would love to see them.

Rodger,
I know you have seen the very famous picture of the British infanrty in North Africa running past what is supposed to be a burning German tank. The picture was staged. You can see the white-red-white stripes the British painted on the tank when they captured it. So, I know that the Brits at least painted the ID stripes on some of the stuff they captured. I can't find the picture I am talking about online but I'll look for it when I get home.
HTH,
Shaun

Ola People
I have built this vehicle a while ago:
It`s the german SdKfz 250/10 in polish service. Note the Polish Eagle and the 10 painted on the side. The green blob of paint is where the balkan kreuz used to be

I would tend to think that depending on how pronounced the 'enemy' markings were would dictate as to whether or not they would get painted over or somehow covered up.
In the case of the captured German AA gun on the back of a Brit truck I would probably say no unless there was a big swastika painted on the shields. Kill markings etc most likely wouldn't be bothered with I'm sure. Not a very visible 'aiming point' from more than 10 feet out if ya catch my drift....

Joe,
best go for cavalier as the etched stuff is to uniformal and doent look quite right and it hard to replicate damage on it
