So, yesterday I was using the spare track from an Italeiri/Testors (real old kit) Panzer IV to add impromptu armor to my tank. I realized in one section that the spare track piece I had was too long to fit the area it was to go in. So, I cut off the extra links. The extra links were then put into anotherlocation... This naturally got me thinking... It would be possible to split all the links from a track and then super glue them back together as though they were individual track links.
This may sound crazy, but it's cheaper than spending the $$ for metal or plastic track from a third party. Just another scracthbuilding idea...What do you think? Has anyone tried this?
Not sure it would work on US tracks, but it seemed to work fine for the Panzer tracks I was working with...

uh, they came out of a real old kit as a set of rubber (vinyl??) track. Not individual links, but a molded length of rubber. Does this make sense?

Yes it does! Which glue did you use to put them together?

My plan was to use super glue because it's quick setting and will adhere to the track rubber. Typical modelling cement does not stick well at all!

Why cut vinyl tracks into seperate links and then glue them back together again? The thing with buying seperate links is that it should be easier to get better quality. I know this is not always the case, but fruils and the likes have usually correct patterns and fixings. I know in some places links are easier to make a nice sag with, but if you try this with any old vinyl tracks and introduce a nice sag, the tracks wont be long enough to meet.
In my opinion the only tracks that really need replacing are german and russian tanks. And if the vinyl tracks are fairly good quality they can be worked to sag a bit better.
If the quality is crap, cutting them into single links wont help either.
Just my 2 euro cents on the subject!
