I am shutting down direct photo uploading for those who had incoming photo albums on the site. I am doing this for two reasons. One, the site is getting low on free server space. If someone where to make any gross errors uploading extrememly large images then they could inadvertently take down the site. Two, the same issue since day one. I need photos really well compressed so as to conserve on space for even more images later. The average photo submission has been about 2-3 times larger than ones that myself or other experience Photoshop users create. This just won't cut it when we have a gallery of close to 5000 images. I wish it would be easy to go back and correct these large file size images, but the system does not allow an easy way to do this AND keep the existing photo captions.
So, until further notice please route ALL photo additions through the email address:
[email protected]
Thanks,
Jim

Always seems to happen when I have photos to upload

Ken and Rob,
I didn't say they could not be uploaded. Just that they should go throught the content@armorama address so they can be sized and compressed to conserve space. I just need to squeeze out as many Kb as possible until the upgrade.
Thanks,
Jim

Affirmative, Sir!
How about images in posts? I believe they don´t eat out Armorama´s capacity if they´re hosted somewhere else?

What's the size you like to keep the images around when they're in the gallery? I've got Photoshop, so I've compressed a few files.

YM,
Generally anything in the 25kb - 75kb is fine. Of course more 25's would be best.

When I set up a .net passport for "Armorama" yesterday I also made an MSN community for us there. I was thinking perhaps it could be used for a specific area of interest. Perhaps a "workbench & showcase" photo album where users could create their own albums and be able to load up things more quickly etc. The real goal would be to make the site a portal for introducing MSN community users to this site. :-)

Sorry Jim. I feel responsible because of the pictures you uploaded yesterday.
I might need a better explination on how to use/compress the camera I use. if so, can you e-mail me "How to Instructions." I use my works MVC-FD85 Digital Mavica. Im very illeterate when it come to Mega Bytes this and compress that.
Sorry, but understandable.

Pete,
Don't feel bad. This is the kind of content that makes this site stand out from the rest so no need to apologize. That said your pics are another example where I should have probably run them through additional compression and resized a little smaller. Again not your fault. Most of them were fine (35kb), there were a few large ones (100kb) that I should have caught first.

Good move Jim. I fully understand the Pics part. Maybe you have some tips on how to reduce size in Photoshop ?
I know how to keep it small, but hey may be there's a better and smaller way to do it than I do now..

Oh Danny....
I liked the eagle better.
Jim
PS: I was actually working on a Photoshop image editing/saving guide as an article for the site. Never got finished. I will try to work on it soon.

I'm not happy with the current pic myself.
If you give me some time, I'll try to find us all a decent Eagle again..
