is there anyone known how to make smoke, said from burning tank or burn out AFV?
Cotton was the rightful choice, but how do you dye it black?

I've seen cotton balls teased out and sprayed with black, dark gray, or brown enamels using spray cans or an airbrush. It has to be sprayed--if you apply paint wet, the cotton will clump together in a ball, and all the fibers will stick together. That said, it cotton smoke almost never looks right. Smoke attenuates over a huge area, and there's no real way to do that with cotton, unless you show only the tiniest wisps of smoke. Best to show a vehicle or building after the fire has gone out.

As Gerald said, pulled apart, airbrushed cotton.

I do disagree with him though. I've seen some pretty good looking dust and smoke effects made this way; even if it does give a slightly cartoonish vibe to the scene.

The only issue is hidding your attachment points really.

I am sorry to say I don't know anything about posting links to other websites. If I could I would post one to Hyperscale and its' Plasticpics forum. You would have to search a while back but there was a dio in 1/48 scale shown there that depicted an airstrike in Vietnam in which napalm has just been dropped. The smoke is very believable and there is even a fireball that was done brilliantly by lighting it from within by electric lights.
If you experiment I'm sure it can be reasonably pulled off?

Have to agree with Jerry.
It's the best Smoke and flame I've seen used.
I've used cotton balls for fires in oil drums and worked well.Used manly clear paints to color. The trick is to to pull the cotton into fine strips. Not all that easy to get a realistic flame.

Aloha Richard,

I hope I remember how to make the images show up and the links to work.

I believe this is the image Jerry mentions:

and another showing an explosion:

There is also this microfiber product that was used to simulate an artillery cannon firing. There used to be a link from the store to the youtube video on how it was constructed, but that link doesn't seem to be here.

This microfiber might work better than cotton as it doesn't seem to absorb the paint, but rather keeps the paint on the outside, thus not getting the clumping of cotton. It is recommended to be used with the special glue.

Mircofiber by Scalerama:

And the special glue for the microfiber:
http://dioramashop.com/product/Smoke-Effect-Liquid-Spray-ver-2-0/BSSC01MT0000052/?main_cate_no=MAIN_2&display_group=1

I would also recommend contacting the Diorama Shop before ordering to make sure they are still going. I say this only because the copyright on the website is 2006, which makes me wonder. Several years ago I did order some other products with no problems, but I recall a different look to the website.

Gaz,
That's what I was afraid of.

Richard,
Sorry the site is defunct, but maybe the product, or somehting similar, is available otherwise.

A possible substitute is Polyester Fiberfill, which I think is available for upholstery, maybe from Wal-Mart or a similar store. Seemed to clump less than cotton in the video below.

Sorry, the link doesn't want to go hot from my tablet. Not sure how to fix that.

There's a whole page on pinterest with burnt out and exploding models.
There are also some "how to" videos.

Think I'll just give up. Even the best ones require more imagination than I'm willing to employ. Smoke is just too diaphanous to be faked.

I made this smoke from a cotton ball. Really had to tease it out and actually used only a bit of it. Airbrushed with black and teased it out a bit more in different directions to make it wispy. You will have to support the trailing end on something. In this case it's just hanging on some of the rigging.

You might take a look at the diorama show in this link...

http://dioramas-and-models.com/cutlass%20ramp%20strike%20(1955).html

He goes through how he did the smoke as well as the broken up aircraft.
