does anyone know of a substitute for silly putty to use as masking when air brushing camo patterns can not seem to be able to find silly putty around where i live

Or try using modeling clay that is oven cured..don't use air dry. You may have to wipe off area before painting over where clay was.
You may also try kids plasticine.
You could also use a mask - in some craft stores you will find latex rubber that you can brush on..peels off. Or just use Vallejo's liquid mask.

You could try blue or white tac and if you want a product made for the job then Wilder produces a product for that purpose.

I use blue tac all the time, get it at a local Staples store, I use the cheap no-name stuff.

I have been using that removable poster putty lately and it seems to work pretty well. Just knead it and make the standard snakes and off you go.

You can buy it on Amazon.

Try to find 'Power Putty' http://www.powerputty.com/ it is sold to rock climbers for grip strength and to guitar players for finger stamina.
You can also get it at medical supply stores for Physical Therapy.
Comes in a square box with a silver clamshell fist inside.
You get 4-5 eggs worth of silly putty inside for about $8.

The dr green is a little too stiff for masking purposes, but the green and dk blue work well. I have not ever used anything lighter.

I only spray acrylics, so I can't speak to how well it reacts to enamel paint or thinner.

You can use white school glue or all purpose glue. To cover my rear; I have not had any issues, with it lifting paint. But, this is a possibility.

It has been a year now but I get mine at Fry's or Safeway grocery stores (Glendale west Phx area) in the little toy section. I will have to look again now that you brought it up. I keep about 5 eggs stashed away. Great stuff.

Beware if you are Silly-Putty-ing over any PE. When you remove the putty it sometimes also lifts off smaller PE bits!

I also had issues of silly putty leaving "greasy" marks over Tamiya flat acrylics after removal. Next time I'll use it over a gloss coat to try...
