Anyone know what is lurking in this box at the rear of the fender? It appears to have a slight oil leak/exhaust blow-by coming from the hole on the side. I'm assuming an APU maybe?

Also any reason why the tube behind it is painted silver/grey?

I saw on a drawing on a earlier version that the device painted silver/grey on the rear of the hull is part of the water fording setup on the tank, if this helps at all.

Hi Scott,
well, I don't have a definitive answer, but based on this
http://pochit.ru/pravo/38203/index.html?page=8 I'm thinking it's an oil storage tank . If you look about halfway down the page there's a drawing which looks to show that silver painted tube running from the side of the engine deck through the tank and exiting out the side , maybe exhaust bleed off to keep the oil warm, similar to mounting the oil storage tank on top of the exhaust on the T-54/55/62 ?
The text on the side should provide some insight as well.

Sean,

That was the same assumption of people on the FB T-62/T-64 group...the writing on the side says what type of oil is supposed to be used, which was motor oil.

I believe the reason for the silver/grey pipe and device on the back is that its part of the water fording setup (part of it is also in the same color) and in an early model tech manual, it showed the tubing attached to the box on the rear of the hull.

I am not sure what the item is on the T-64 but those are great photos of the tank. The weathering, rust, mud etc. How about some more photos??

Just a thought, its not the supply of oil that gets injected into exhaust for local smoke production is it?

interesting, I guess that's a possibility. Google translate doesn't do very well
with that link.
