I am finishing up a Sd.kfz7 Flakvierling and I have used the hairspray technique to do a well worn whitewash. I am displaying the vehicle with the canvas cab cover in use. I painted the canvas cab cover a dark green and used a black oil wash to simulate dirt/ grime, but there is a pretty stark contrast between the whitewash and the canvas. I have tried searching online for images of German softskins with the canvas painted, but have not found any. Did the Germans brush the whitewash on the canvas tops? Or should I just use some white and gray pastels and brush that on to lighten the canvas? Thanks!

Well you answered your own question, what does it look like? There is a stark contrast. So if the crew goes through the trouble of putting camo on the vehicle, why would they leave a big old bat signal begging for a strafing run or tank shell? They'd white wash the canvas as well, wouldn't you? Or perhaps grab some white sheet, or something. Anywho, it should be camo'ed as well. The fun part is representing the difference of the finish from the whitewash on canvas as opposed to whitewash on the metal and wood of the vehicle. Plenty of opportunity for some artistic expression.

Kind of hard to tell but I think the canvas has been white washed along with everything else. In any case the canvas is certainly quite light in color.

Or as Dom said, throw a white sheet over it to break up that large dark area.

While I am sure there were variations and exceptions the majority of German canvas starts out as a lighter shade than you may be using on your vehicle, almost a camel/tan color.

This vehicle looks like it might just have multi-colored camo added to the cloth top.

Again more light colored canvas:
