Friends,
My Coverup campaign dio is finally finished. (Well, almost. I have to add finnish cockades to the fur hats )
The title "Maa-ottelu" translates to "National games: Finland vs. Russia" or something, a sports thing anyway.
I added one guy in the dio for balance, he´s fleeing to the right.
Convincing or not, the red flag on the BT-7 that was in the very first sketches made it to the final diorama, I think it just adds a lot to the composition of the scene.
The first pic contains a photoshop backdrop.
Have fun, comments are welcome!

on me!

True. On the other hand it seems to be windy and it´s not necessarily snowing at the moment. But it´s a good idea to add some frosty haze on the flag, perhaps near the pole?

May be the pics...At least the flag movement and the fleeing soldier suggest it´s rumbling over the trench any second.
The last pic, however, DOES look like the tank is sliding backwards... #:-)

Thanks for the comments!

Actually I have to disagree with with some of the above comments. I loved the sense of movement in the whole diorama. With the runnng gear conforming to the shape of the hill, the guys fleeing, and the flag blowing in the wind. The composition is damned near perfect!
The whole scene is so tied together it could be a period photograph ..... and maybe thats why I love the redness of the flag.
Sometimes when these tanks move forward over difficult objects, they slide slightly backwards and to the sides as they try to get a grip. Maybe its a mental picture you have in your head. Ever see those extreme games in Iceland where vehicles try to climb steep slopes or go over obstacles?
The whole dio reminds me a little of the black and white dio a guy (Barry Grazzo ?) made a few years ago. It does actually look cold and old. The colouring on the flag is complete contrast... just perfect!!
I love the pose of all the figures as well. Each figure suits the story line and none there just because he was also from the same box.
The only thing I believe could be improved upon is to use some balsa to fix up the sides of the higher ground. I think it gives a more professional appearance.
Most excellent work Toni. Great addition to the campaign folder!

Plasticbattle,
as usual , I see your mind goes along with mine. Many nice pointers in there.
The position of the tank used to be more erect , just about to drop down down on its front wheels, but the shape of the terrain suggested a slightly different place for the tank. Also the figures fitted better this way.
Actually I just noticed from the pics that this dio is very close to being all black&white. Which is why the red colour packs even more punch. Without thinking about it, I even toned down the skin tones of the figures...
Thanks for pointing out the sides. I´ll try to think of something neat to make them look better.

Cheers,
Toni

I love it. However I'm not familiar with world flags. Is there any reason the flag is solid red? Or is there details I cannot see?

Is there any reason the flag is solid red

Actually there is. I tried to look for a Soviet Union "War flag" that could have been used in this kind of circumstances. The only possible suggestion would have been a yellow-outlined red star in the middle of the flag, or the basic Soviet Union flag with the hammer, blade and star. And if it was a basic USSR flag, the yellow details would be only on the back side, which doesn´t show in my dio anyway. I didn´t use the big red star with yellow outline design because I ound it hard to recognize.
So I thought a simple red flag does it as well as a historical flag as I have no idea if they ever used a flag on a tank like this in reality anyway...

;)

Beautiful work!
I've been using some elastomeric compound for covering up twisted wires on a monster tree I am making. That stuff is perfect for billowy snows on tree limbs or any other stationary items. What did you use?

Envar -

Truly awesome work you have done here! I am very impressed with the scene you have created. The faded paint on the tank, and the flag....... hehe .... nice :-)

I am especially fond of the picture of the dio on the base (4th pic) as it captures the feel of the art as a whole..... truly impressive.... wow!

Yes, the figures... The two tank hunters are from Dragon´s German Tank Hunter team set.
I made snow coats using Milliput and replaced the heads with Hornet´s resin pieces.
The Mosin-Nagant rifles and the Suomi SMG are AM stuff as well. The tank hunters carry very light load, perhaps they left the rest of their equipment somewhere to knock off the tank.
The fleeing guy is from a cheap Tamiya German infantry set, soft and crappy but goes well in there.
German figures can be converted to Finns quite easilly. Uniform and helmet models are similar, as well as equipment. Especially when you cover the torso with a snow coat! (:-)

The figures were primed with matt black, then painted with acrylics and oils for skin tones.

Cheers,
Toni
