I normally use Testors clear flat, which is great but has just a bit of a satin effect. I would like to get something real flat to airbrush some resin tarps. I know you can't use XF21 flat base straight or it will silver, but I'm thinking about using a combo of flat base and clear gloss; wondering if a 50/50 mix of this thinned might do the trick. Anybody ever try this; if so any comments or recomendations on mix percentages?

I do this. Depending on the level of finish, I'll usually mix 1 part flat base to 1-3 parts clear gloss and then thin it for airbrushing. All I can say it try it on a test sheet over a gloss finish or a "paint hulk" and see how it lays. It doesn't take much flat base to suppress the gloss.

I have experimented some with the flat base. I found that a 50/50 mix is a bit too much, and usually a 75/25 mix of gloss to flat base seemed to work for me. You have to be careful with this stuff, just experiment with what mix really works for you. Just make sure to not put too much, with the flat base, less is better.

For a "dead flat" finish, I find that the Model Masters Flat Clear Acryl go on FLAT, I use via Airbrush and love it. It is all I use.

I agree! I used Tamiya Flat base mixed with Gloss for 4-5 years and recently switched to Testors Dullcote and WOW.....I Love that stuff! I thin it about 60/40 Thinner/ paint with Lacquer thinner and ive never once had it try to frost on me. Haven't touched the Tamiya Flat since.

If you want to stick to a Tamiya product, just get XF86, their flat varnish.

For a really dead flat finish, I use a 50/50 mix of MM Acryl flat clear and 91% alcohol with a drop of Tamiya Flat base added to it.
