No chance. Have you ever seen a german Bundeswehr officer using map and compass? Rumors have it the main reason the BW was not part of desert storm is the US was afraid our tanks might actually end up in Bagdad or Teheran instead of Kuwait...

Historical or movie version?

It`s the gesture that counts!

And maybe Polish Leopard 2 will save our butts like the Polish cavalry did in 1683 at the gates of Vienna!

In that case I insist on winged turrets and and a gathering of troops in the Wienerwald (optionally the fast food joint). Just for historical accuracy

As for officers with map and compass: Once I was standing at a crossroad with the batallion S3 and S2 in the car.

S2(looking at map): Left to the barracks
S3(looking at map): No, right

I politely suggested following the large sign saying "A.... barracks" that pointed straight ahead

There is this video from Munster with the two Leopard 2A5 or A6 that have lost their way...

Not to mention a certain high ranking NCO that got lost on the barracks training range. After beeing stationed there for more than a decade. Granted, his friends Johny and Maria may have had something to do with it...

German MoD announced yesterday that we will purchase additional 100 Leopard 2A4, possibly to be upgraded to Leopard 2 A7.

A common problem is preparing for the last war, in those an asymmetric threat. What will the next be?

Can I recommend a book, 'Lions, Donkeys and Dinosaurs'
Its about UK but applicable most democratic countries.

Weapon systems are purchased as part of a social engineering problem, spending money in certain communities or supporting certain companies, its about jobs not about the needs of the armed services.

A great read, I bought four copies recently, abebooks, for about a buck each.

Gentlemen, we are going about this the wrong way. We don't need more Leopards, Abrams, F-35's and Tiffies. Marie Harf at the State Department said our enemies just need good jobs and they will stop being mean.

Best wishes,

Ian
