been looking at a lotta pix of this tank, and while it seems there aren't many from Budapest that weren't destroyed, what markings would any of them have had? largely completed mine and that's one thing I'm missing. also, were any used in Germany in '53, and what markings? thx

The few pics I have of them in Hungary don't appear to have any markings at all. How could a JS-3M be in Hungary in 1956? I didn't think they started production until 1960?

I don't know the exact dates, but most if not all of the IS 3 series tanks were built before 1950 and then converted to IS-3M standard. This process must have started before 1956, as photos exist of IS-3 and IS-3M destroyed alongside during Hungarian uprising.
As to the markings, all the photos I saw seem to confirm that these tanks had none, not even any numbers.
Cheers,
Greg

Never seen or heard any JS-3M in supressing the Volksaufstand in Berlin in 1953, only T-34785 and maybe some SU-85 or -100.

thx, ya'll. from what I've found, some external M features were applied prior to '60 like the fenders

That would be the only explanation. I have that pic too.
