I remember M1's and M2's arriving at Desert Shield still in 3 tone Nato camo. I remember some or most, were repainted in Desert tan after arriving. I hope I got this right, my Desert Storm M1A1 I plan on not having too much weathering on the Desert tan since it would be a relatively fresh paintjob but what of the underside of the tank?

Did I get this right?

I would add some caked on, dried mud. It was a soup bowl over there between Jan and March.

Okay good to know, I hadn't considered mud in the desert.

Didn't the tanks painted over there have issues with some paint wearing off prematurely? Haven't started weathering the hull and turret yet.

Don't know about tanks but some Bradleys surely did

Some tanks peeled the same. The paint used was a locally-bought Saudi paint that wasn't resilient at all. Some of it was latex house paint.

Yes lots of wear on the upper surfaces where we walked and climbed all over the tank. Also, just in case the undersides weren't painted as we didn't expect for the enemy to see the belly of our beasts.

Okay, thanks for all the replies. I'll see how worn & chipped up I can make it. without going overboard.

I look at my M1 this morning after staying up too late and I can't believe how bad I overdid it... and I wasn't even drinking

The problem with your chipping is that you didn't apply it in a logical way. I mean the top of the barrel or the front slopes of the turret would certainly not wear that way and that much. On the contrary, the areas were the crew members board their tank are more subject to wear.
I think you didn't use a suitable method too. If you're self confident enough you can try the hairspray technique. If not a bit of scouring pad slightly dipped in paint will allow you to create the effect you want. You just have to tap it onto the areas you need.

A few photos of the real deal might help you scale it back in a logical way as Olivier mentioned.

Nice picture, Damon. Were the back sides of the wheels and road arms repainted sand or left Nato/Carc green? I always wondered about that.

Nice work on the build. As others have stated, caling back the chipping and wear will go a long way to looking more realistic. Think about where the wear and chipping would be. Places where the crew would walk, places on the lower hull and skirts that would get scraped by rocks, dirt and sand.

Wheel back sides were not painted. Any thing that was inaccessible or not easily accessible was not bothered with. Even the under are of the turret back just forward of the bustle rack sometimes got missed.

Blaze Orange

I remember seeing someone had orange on the 20mm Ammo cans hanging off the turret. Was this random or just as common as the orange tarp? Can't seem to locate any photos with the ornage painted cans right now

Never saw any orange ammo cans. Could have been a one off.
