Hi all,
Love that you guys are here to clear up questions!
Anyhow, my few are as follows (relating to my Tamiya M1A1 with plow):
1) Does the hull mounted APU have non-slip on top. I think not, but would like confirmation.
2) When (or it) were they used in Iraq? Or would a sand vehicle with the Hull APU be only US?
3) Does anyone have good pics on how the Plow chains are routed? The Tamiya directions have me stymied.
Thanks for looking.
John

The hull-mounted APU was a late '80s to early '90s feature seen on stateside tanks and some that deployed to Operation Desert Storm (ODS) in '90. The top did not have anti-slip. They were not still around during the '03 invasion of Iraq and after.
The Tamiya M1A1 w/mine plow is one from ODS; '90-'91.

If you want to build a Abrams from OIF/OEF then you will need to score a M1A2, Tamiya makes the Tusk Sep kit as well, I've built a few variants of Tamiya's abrams, and they really just fall together, one of the easiest builds out there.

John,
Personally, I would skip the hull mounted APU. They might have been deployed to Saudi Arabia, I have not seen any photographic evidence that the APUs "crossed the berm" into combat. Heck, I never saw any hull mounted APUs in the 1990's at all, I did seem them when I arrived at FT Knox in 2000 on tanks used for training.
As for the chains, drop me a PM with your e-mail and I will send you some pics

there were some M1A1 Abrams in OIF the ony army unit that had M1A2 were the 1st CAV and the 4th Infantry division all other US army units that deployed used M1A1 and the marines also used M1A1 in OIF and some marine M1A1 were sent to afghanistan

The best kit for an OIF/Iraq or A'stan Abrams is the Dragon M1A1 AIM kit (3535). It is the most current M1A1 kit available. It blows away the Tamiya kits on details as well.

Just to be clear on units deploying with M1A2s:
4th ID deployed in to Iraq in April 2003 with M1A2 SEPs, 1 CD deoployed into Bagdad in 2004 with SEPs, 3ACR deployed in 2005 with M1A2s. post 2006, all three units redeployed back to Iraq with M1A2 SEPs. 1ID, 3ID, 1AD and the USMC Tank Battalons all used M1A1s subvariants (HAs, HCs, and AIMs) during their Iraq deployments
