I use a few things - washes, drybrushing & weathering powders and I'd have to say that my favorite by far are the powders (what better way to show the effects of dust than with dust??). When it comes to tank barrels I'll dip the end of the barrel into the darkest powder that I have to show blast effects, after it's dipped I'll go back and brush off the excess... it turns out pretty good.
