I want to build a wading variant of the Sherman Mk.III. Resicast #352271 claims to be applicable to the Mk.III. However, I have not been able to locate any photos of a wading variant. This brings me to the question. Where and when did the Mk.III employ wading stacks?

Normandie for one. There are quite a few photos of 27AB M4A2s pre-Goodwood with the remnants visible on the rear. IWM shots, so you would probably find them on the website. I can find some neg numbers when I get home.

Hello there,
Have a look at the Archer set here:
http://www.archertransfers.com/AR35251.html
Has markings for one such vehicle and photos of the same.
Cheers,
Sean

Here are Sherman III's with wading stacks built by Fisher (same as Dragon's Sicily kit)

These are for Normandy, so you would have to find appropriate markings.
The Archer transfers above are not for a Fisher built tank, if you want to be 'completely' accurate.

Thanks, Jesse. I am trying to keep this one as accurate as possible. Or, at least plausible. I like be able to list a build as a specific tank. But, I have no problem leaving off certain identifiers to mark it as part of a regiment, rather than specific vehicle.

the first one Jessie linked to is Staffordshire Yeomanry, the second is 13/18H in 27th Armd bde. Archer also do (or did) a set for 'Balaclava', turret number 10 which was the CO's tank in 13/18H

Yup, but Balaclava isn't a Fisher hull, which the Dragon Sicily kit is.

The Fisher hull referred to has the large boxy "Fabricated/welded" hoods. Tasca Kit 35-018 is the one you want for Balaclava which has cast hoods. DML also offer a Sherman III kit of the same hull type (6313)but the Tasca/Asuka is far superior

Of course. All of these decisions come down to accuracy, detail, constructability, etc.
The Tasca is ahead in all 3 of those categories. How much that is worth to "you" is up for interpretation. I'm building the same kit Matt has (Sicily) kit right now, because Tasca doesn't offer that particular hull style, and I wanted to do a specific USMC tank.

In addition to welded hoods, all components on a Fisher hull are fabricated from plates or bar stock, as opposed to other Sherman's which had cast components.

On post-DV, small hatch Fisher's. Fisher used cast hoods during the DV (direct vision) phase of production.

Can I swap the upper hull for a cast version. And, if so, what other changes would need to be made? I have hull from Dragon's other mk.III, but I have misplaced the rest of the kit.

In general, I don't believe so. I don't recall the dates, but the earlier upper hull was typically seen with the 3 piece final drive assembly, while the later one had the single piece. And there's some other differences.
See my first post in this thread with M4A2's (like your Sicily kit) with wading stacks (like the Resicast stuff).

Thank you for the information. This will be shelved, for a few months in order to clear my bench.

Depends where you are. There is a $4 difference here and having built 6313 I'd consider the extra $4 money well spent.

You can cross kit no worries and a look at photos shows both types of Transmission cover. The fit of which on the DML kits will require a little work. If that is what you have it should work fine, just check photos for what details you need.
