you got it Brian the only thing is that the those side rails go straight back and butt upagainst the bustle rack like on the M1A1 and M1A2

Nope. Or rather: it depends.

Early M1IP tanks had rails exactly like in Brian's model. Only later they were changed to straight back type.

Interesting thing is that actually late production M1s had the rails already straight and bustle rack factory added. My guess is that the change of rail design came after the first batch of larger M1IP turrets was already manufactured (so hey retained the original design of the rail back end), but when original M1s (w/smaller turret) were also still in production.

Hi guys, as the O/P for this thread, I thought I'd tie it up with a few pics of my M1. It's the original Tamiya kit built OOB.
Finished in Tamiya acrylics and lightly weathered.
Thanks for all the replies.

Hello Patrick,

That looks like a beautiful application of the winter verdant pattern. I had to look at your photos several times as they looked very much like computer generated images to me. Well done, sir!

Respectfully,

Tamiya M1 is still a good start for a nice model but it needs some works to improve it.
Dragon M1 Panther hull has anti-slip surface which was applied from september 1987 and this is good only for IPM1 or a late M1.
See my reworked Abrams

Excellent job on the old girl.
I have a couple of those old Tamiya kits in the stash, getting the itch to get into one of them, thanks for the inspiration.

#Richard - Thank you very much. A new M1 from Meng or RFM would be a dream come true!

#Russel - Many thanks. Go get the kits out. For all their inaccuracies, they fall together into a nice kit.

The IP's when shipped to Europe were overall forest green just like the older M1's.

There are plenty of pics showing the IP's with 11ACR in overall green.

I know based on talking to "Border Legion" guys from the 2nd and 11th ACR's that everything before the A1's were green

Looking some advice guys.
I want to build an Abrams and finish it in the MERDC winter verdant scheme.
Apart from the old Tamiya kit (35124), are there any other kits available that would have been done is this scheme.
I'm happy enough to build the Tamiya kit, it's just that its hard to find and goes for funny money on ebay, when it does appear.

If you're doing MERDC, just remember when you apply markings that only stateside units used the intial M1 in camo. USAREUR used it strictly in Forest Green. M1s and IPM1s were sent over green. Starting with M1A1, the NATO tricolor scheme was phased in. That also applies to prepositioned stocks slated for units deploying from stateside, like 1st CAV and 2nd Armored. They were all forest green.

However just to confuse things, they were later updated with NATO tricolor when those tanks were eventually handed over to the Guard and Reserves.

Who makes the most correct looking early 80s "forest green" paint in a spray can...Tamiya or Testers?

Picked up a Tamiya M1 kit along the the M3 Bradley at a yard sale for $5. Painted both in MERDC, because I wanted a M1 in that scheme in the collection.

Is it accurate? No, but I enjoyed doing it.

Looks good.

I don't know why you say it isn't accurate. There are plenty of photos online of M1's in the various MERDC schemes.
