seeing as how empty it is, and other than the oversized AEF interior, is there anything else out there that's available? thx

Nope. The AEF interior can be made to fit pretty easily though. I plan to do the same and have test-fit it. It isn't too bad.

Some of the troop gun port covers don't really fit that well. i'd leave them open.

I don't think the Def set really has an interior. The seat is an office chair.
As to AEF Designs, they are long out of business. They do come up from time to time on eBay though. Good luck with your search.

wellp, guess I won't be going with that, considering what I've read about aef. did DML's early BMPs have interiors that could be sacrificed?

The old DML / Dragon and ESCI BMP 1's & 2's did not have interiors and apparently are more like 1/32nd scale. Decent kits for the day though.

will trumps BMP3 interior fit the 1? it's boggles that they provide for the 3, and their BRDM, with an interior but not the 1

No, the BMP3 interior is totally different. Their new BMP2 comes with an interior though. I don't know why they skipped the BMP1.
New Trumpeter BMP2.
The turret interior is no that accurate, but the hull is pretty good.

There was some talk on IDF Modelling.com that AEF has become AE&M (Applied Engineering and Mechanics)! and was going to retool old masters and get things turned around (new investor?). Still waiting...
Here's a couple Finnish BMP-1 interior pics, I think I've got some more recent ones somewhere...

Nope, the Skif BMP3 is still a BMP3 which has a totally different interior. It won't work at all.

Sorry I'm a bit late to this, but a Russian company scaled down the AEF interiors to 1/35, you can buy them here -
